Horrible and disgusting display from the japanese the last 15 minutes... That display is the very reason of why the games in the last round of the groupstage are played simultaneously, and goes back to 1982 Germany-Austria. THIS is the very definition of anti-football... They knew they were qualified even with a 0-1 loss, but if Senegal scored they would have been eliminaterd. So instead of even trying to save themselves, they were hoping Colombia would hold their lead. How could you put your faith in an eventual result in another game that is close to eliminating you?! If Senegal would have scored one goal it would have been bye bye Japan. I appreciated more the South Koreans who played with heart.

FIFA needs to regain one morsel of honour back by subtracting Fair Play points from both Japan and Poland. It's not against the rules, I know, to do what Japan did, and some will even call it tactics. But, this is only true when the other team is still chasing after you and the game is still being played (albeit in an undignified manner). When BOTH teams stop playing, however, then it's something different.

This argument would be meaningless if Japan proceeded on goal difference or goals scored (say they had 3 more than Senegal). But for them to make it because of FAIR PLAY and Senegal, who set such a great example, should be knocked out, then this should be taken into consideration. I wonder if more people would take this seriously were France or Germany the ones in Senegal's place...

What is wrong with depending on the the results of the other game? Man Utd had to rely on QPR to beat Man City in order for them to win the league in 2012. I mean the situation here is not exactly the same, but had Japan gone to launch a final attack on Poland, they could have conceded again, which would have resulted in their elimination. Rather, they chose to depend on the other result, which I think is more of an risk than to go full attack. I acknowledge that the final 15 mins was seen as one of the worst football ever, and as a Japanese person, I felt that too. But I think the manager and the team should also be praised for winning the high risk gamble.

Agree, it was an embarassing performance for us but all that counts is that we managed to progress to the knockout phase. I still remember the moments that we tried to attack and almost conceded the goal, like Poland's counter attack that led to Lewan's epic miss in front of goal. This is the best that we could do cuz Nishino chose to start crappy players like Makino, Yamaguchi, Gotoku Sakai and Muto!

I agree with the opinions that says the japan team's display in the last 15 minutes was so boring. And it was very ironic that japan went through by virtue of "fair play points". This kind of act is totally against our moral and should not be repeated. On the other hand, I had an impression that japan team have grew up with the cunning of italian or brazilian and became stronger than ever.

As I expected, narrow minded people blaming on Japan's football. They did never break the rules nor do something harmful to opponents. It was the fittest strategy for them to qualify for the next round. Why do you guys keep thinking every team should play football in the same and obvious style? You should be mature enough to accept diversity.

I'm Japanese, what Japan did last 15 minutes was really shitty. Just Poor.
But Poland wasn't trying to score any further either, and given the result of the other game, having 15 minutes left, I guess they did what they have to do, also given that they didn't play most of their starters.
If they keep this up, they deserve to lose next game.
So I hope they show their real potential in the knockouts.

@_Pelle_ I agree, for soccer lovers, what they did is absolutely disgusting and hard to watch.
However, in the world cup, the main focus is to advance. We used up all our switches, and played without our key attackers such as Honda and Kagawa. I believe they played in this way to avoid Polands counters, preventing them to score and preventing the risk to potentially receiving yellow and red cards, which may lose our chances of going up.

Im not saying Japan deserved to go up, Im just saying that they just did what they believe was best for them to go up

People are saying Japan was disgusting but they are doing what they think is the best for them to go to the next round. Every single team that thinks with their head and not their emotions does that. France and Denmark didin't play this bad but they knew they were both through and didn't really try. It's horrible to watch but its probably the safest thing they can do to help themselves. Of course if Senegal scored Japan would be screwed but I guess they considered trying not to concede again easier and more likely than Senegal scoring.

Would have made a little more sense if only Columbia vs Senegal played beforehand. Atrocious display of anti-football, relying on the luck of others.

@zebragun Then the Japanese would have played anti-football throughout the 90 mins!

Everyone is saying Japan played disgusting for the last 15 minutes, but no one is explaining what they actually fucking did. Some of us were watching the other game, so it would be nice to know what they were doing.

They just kept passing the ball between defenders and didn't even try to attack. That's anti-football.

So Japan gets outplayed by a 10-man Colombia team and then loses to Poland -- but advanced? LOL. Senegal was the best team in this group, followed by Colombia.

Its ironic to see that Japan is progressing to the round of 16 via "Fair play points". What they did in the last 15 minutes was not fair play at all lol.

@R7 After Colombia scored against Senegal, Japan just stopped playing, and instead just passing the ball to each other without attempting to score against Poland (who is leading) because they hope that Colombia will hold their lead so they can qualify to round of 16, for the rest of the game.

I normally support Japan, but this kind of "play for result" is totally disgusting. I guess their fighting spirit is gone when they know the initial result on other stadium.

Japan football has been disgusting from the start, horrible playstyles and everything. They were so lucky against colombia who conceded a 3rd minute red card. I hope they get trashed by Belgium or England like 4-0 or smth.

Tbf to Japan, tactics are tactics. I don't get why they rested their star players when they could go for first and get the easier bracket. But I guess they just wanted to go through. They played well, bar this game.
