Who would win? The 20 EPL teams vs. the 20 La Liga teams

Real Madrid 483 7140

Okay guys, here's the deal. If we pitted the EPL and La Liga teams against each other (which means 1st faces 1st, and 16th faces 16th) in home-away two legged matches, who would win and why? You choose. And here's the tables from last season. Points collected last season are in brackets. And if you want, you can only comment on the fixtures of the team you support.

  1. Real Madrid (100) vs. Man City (89)
  2. Barcelona (91) vs. Man United (89)
  3. Valencia (61) vs. Arsenal (70)
  4. Malaga (58) vs. Tottenham (69)
  5. Atletico (56) vs. Newcastle (65)
  6. Levante (55) vs. Chelsea (64)
  7. Osasuna (54) vs. Everton (56)
  8. Mallorca (52) vs. Liverpool (52)
  9. Sevilla (50) vs. Fulham (52)
  10. Bilbao (49) vs. West Brom (47)
  11. Getafe (47) vs. Swansea (47)
  12. Sociedad (47) vs. Norwich (47)
  13. Betis (47) vs. Sunderland (45)
  14. Espanyol (46) vs. Stoke (45)
  15. Rayo (43) vs. Wigan (43)
  16. Zaragoza (43) vs. Aston Villa (38)
  17. Granada (42) vs. QPR (37)
  18. Villareal (41) vs. Bolton (36)
  19. Sporting (37) vs. Blackburn (31)
  20. Racing (27) vs. Wolves (25)

@Lodatz and raimondo

Have to agree with Raimondo here. Robben, Ribery, and Muller are much more problematic and lethal than Walcott and Podolski. And btw, Giroud isn't that fast. His speed is roughly equivalent to Mario Gomez's, which Valencia dealt with pretty well. Also just to point it out, Valencia tied Bayern at home 1-1 with 10 men for 57 minutes (Barragan, their RB, was sent off in the 33rd minute).

"The only reason that the league has the highest coefficient"  Spainish teams have dominated EL also.. 3/4 spanish teams in EL semi last year. 4 spanish teams in CL 2nd round this year. quarter finals.. 0 english teams, 3 spanish 3 german. wait and see..

U mad that Valencia won their the last 2 games against Spurs and Arsenal (not that mean much atm but still)...

also lodatz please note that Arsenal is not real. and Valenica had a real bad day that day against Real. against Bayern who is considered one of the strongest counter attacking team sin the world. we just lost 2-1 away. also with real we had have 2 draws this year where one of those matches was a win if not the linesman was blind... (Soldado 2 Meter onside)

You are the one who is sad. You almost seem detached from reality. you are overrating PL even more than i first though. Facts remains that you dont follow la liga and is just making acussations against it. and then you try facts but you cant get away from the fact that spain has the higher number of CL victorys. highest number of EL wins. most teams this year in 2nd round CL and in coefficient ranking. the highest ranking league in the world.

you remain a mystery to me...

@Lodatz Hey, Lodatz has a point. Valencia have a pretty shitty consistency record for their defense. But, like I said, they like to show up for the big games pretty solid at the back (except for Real 5-0 Valencia).

@ Lodatz, first ive never said they were solid. I know we have flaws like every single team out there. Second I countered your arguement about dealing with Arsenals attack and you have nothing left to say. this isnt about Spurs-ManU. I dont believe in saying "Oh granada beat Madrid 1-0 so now they can beat valencia 6-0 becuase Madrid won 5-0." No thats a load of crap and the sport doesnt work that way. I stated we handled Bayern quite well, better then all expectations really. There is nothing left to say, I simply countered to this:

"I say again: VALENCIA'S DEFENSE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO COPE WITH THE PACE OF ARSENAL'S ATTACK.
You don't agree? Explain why, rather that trying to attack me just because I've pointed out that your defense sucks. "

@knibis: "U mad that Valencia won their the last 2 games against Spurs and Arsenal (not that mean much atm but still)..."

Why would I be mad about a pre-season game?

"also lodatz please note that Arsenal is not real. and Valenica had a real bad day that day against Real."

Okay. Did they also have a bad day when Malaga put 4 past them, without reply. How about Sociedad? Didn't they win 5-2? How many have Bilbao put past your defense this season? I think it's 5, over 2 games?

The list of teams whose Arsenal's attack is 'not as good as' is starting to stack up pretty quick, wouldn't you say? And that's with them putting 7 past Southampton and Newcastle and even 5 past Spurs this season. Not to mention the highest Goals For in the CL group.

Arsenal may not be Real Madrid, but if you think the Gunners have a poor attack, then what sport have you watching? O.o

@Dynastian: Okay, that's a fair point. Yes, Bayern ARE very good at the counter-attack. But that's just it; Valencia didn't play on the attack themselves, during those matches. Because they know how good Bayern are, Valencia were playing for draws. Successfully.

By contrast, if (like knibis) Valencia are nowhere near as worried about Arsenal, won't they themselves press?

It's hard to counter attack if the team you're playing against parks the bus, as Valencia did against a Bayern who can often have troubles breaking teams down. Against Arsenal? They'd let rip, and I think they'd pay for it.

I guess we'll never know.

@raimondo: See above, to Dynastian.

The reason I bring up other match-ups, is because if anyone is going to cherry pick matches, then I can do the same. knibis doesn't seem to understand the concept of the 50s being an irrelevant era, but I wager you do, and if we go by recent form I don't think it paints a pretty picture of the case you're trying to make.

We're all speculating, remember. I respect the fact that Valencia have managed to pull it out against big teams (with about a 40% success rate); I just look at the balance of the squads, and they preferred style of play, and I see the Gunners slicing you open, man.

As I said to Dynas: I guess we'll never know.

@Lodatz to me anything more than 5 years ago is really useless. History can't help you win a match. I by no means think if we went up against arsenal we'd win 3-0. I think it would be a good game and if both teams are in form it would be a tight but intense game coming down to who made the fewest mistakes. Only way would be to hope we get pitted against eachother in champions league maybe next season looks like it will be Europa for both :(

@rai: That could be the catalyst for the PL teams starting to take the EL seriously, again. Because while other leagues may do, the simple fact is the English don't consider it important enough to try for.

I wish otherwise, even. I'd love to see Spurs give it a real go in the EL this year. AVB has won it with Porto, so maybe he will; though, as ever, the pressure of the competition for CL slots is taking precedence over everything else; as it always does.

And, given the choice between fighting for a CL slot, and trying to win the EL, I'd expect (and want) him to focus on the former.

Also, in fairness, I'm not trying to say that Arsenal would win 3-0, either. I'm just saying that over the balance of two legs, I see the Gunners' attack making the difference. 4-3, maybe? Or even a 2-1?

There's a whole lot of dick wagging going on here and I guess this kind of topic always brings that out in FR fans.

All I would like to say is that I believe that an Arsenal Valencia match would be great. I believe, as I would wager many others do, that the 2 teams are quite evenly matched and that they have been historically. Both clubs have had a pretty tough season (although Valverde has been ona  good run of late) for different reasons. For me, it would be hard to call as I would suggest that our Offense may slightly edge out but likewise Valencia's would probably have greater tactical maturity.

In short, I'd relish the contest as I think it'd be a good one but that is all I'll say. Sorry for the brief interruption of your cynical debate.

^well, I dunno about that, considering he just said that Rayo would rip most teams to pieces. Wouldn't beat anyone in the top half of the table.
