Predictor

Introduction

FootyRoom Predictor is a parimutuel betting game where users back their predictions by placing bets made of virtual points. All bets go into a shared pool which is why this type of betting is often called pool betting. In this game you compete against other players not just by predicting correct score but also by taking measured risk when odds are right.

Predicting & Betting

You are not required to bet in every match, however, if you want to have a chance to earn any points then you must bet. Predicting score without betting is possible and it will still be recorded as a correct prediction for your profile should you guess it right. Once a bet is placed you can't change your prediction, but you can raise your stake should you wish to.

When you predict a score you are essentially making two predictions: correct outcome and correct score. Depending on whether you got one or both correct you stand to win different amount of points. When you place a bet, half of your stake goes into correct outcome pool and the other half goes to correct score pool.

Odds

Unlike fixed odds betting that you can find with any bookmaker, in pool betting odds are changing when new bets are made. This means that odds are made by the players. Usually these odds are not the same as the ones you'd find with a bookie, however they still follow a common theme where a favorite team will have lower return and underdog a higher return. One important observation in pool betting is that odds are spread out wider than usual and as such you get higher highs and lower lows when it gets to returns. For you as a player that means you should risk more often on underdogs.

Scoring Rules

  1. Predicting correct outcome returns full stake, regardless whether you got correct score or not.
  2. In case no one predicted correct score, half of the stake will be refunded regardless of what you predicted.
  3. In case no one predicted correct outcome, full stake will be refunded regardless of what you predicted.
  4. Correct outcome wins you points from wrong outcome pools.
  5. Correct score wins you extra points, however these points come from wrong score pools of wrong outcomes only. That is to say that by predicting correct score you do not win points from players predicting "correct outcome but wrong score". You only win points from players who got wrong outcome. Conversly, if you got "correct outcome but wrong score", you don't loose your stake to players who got correct score.
  6. All returns are calculated in proportion to your stake. The higher you stake the more you stand to win from the pool.

Rounds

Each round spans one calendar week from Monday to Sunday and usually consists of 10 matches. Rounds are named after year and week number. There is a limit of 2000 points maximum stake per round. This ensures that "rich" players don't get too far away in leaderboards but still get some noticable advantage.

Points

Points in FootyRoom Predictor are like virtual money but with only one purpose (for now) – to make bets. New players get 1000 points. At the start of every round players who have less than 1000 points on their balance will get topped up with free points from FootyRoom until their balance reaches 1000 points. This ensures that all players get a fair fighting chance in every round.

Ranking

There are overall leaderboards and round leaderboards. This game tries to put more emphasis on round leaderboards because every player has a chance to shine once a week. Ranking is based on P/L (profit/loss) in both types of leaderboards.

Terms used in UI

  • P/L – Profit/Loss.
  • ROI – Rreturn on Investment.
  • Correct – Number of correct predictions. Each prediction in this game consists of two predictions: outcome and exact score.
  • Highest P/L – the highest profit/loss made by any player in the round.
