Xavi attacks Mourinho

January 7th 2014 article can be found on goal.com

The Spain star slammed the former Real Madrid and Inter boss' style of play, while also criticising the style of Roberto Di Matteo’s Champions League-winning Chelsea side
Barcelona midfielder Xavi has launched another attack on Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, hitting out at ‘The Special One’s’ footballing philiosophy.

The Spain international, who was regularly critical of the Portuguese while he was in charge of Clasico rivals Real Madrid, insists Pep Guardiola and Johan Cruyff are examples of coaches who want their sides to play football in the right way.

“Pep Guardiola is an important person for me - Jose Mourinho is a coach who focuses only on results,” Xavi told Panenka magazine.

“He says he is ‘The Special One’ because he won this and that in so many countries but I do not like the way his teams play.

“Who remembers the Inter side who were champions of Europe? For me, he has not left a legacy, unlike Cruyff has in the Netherlands.”

Xavi was also critical of former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, who guided the Blues past Barca in the Champions League semi-finals on their way to winning the competition in 2012.

“Di Matteo was the same [as Mourinho]," the playmaker argued. "He won the Champions League, but from my point of view that team didn’t play at all.

“I am happy playing for Barca because of our philosophy.”

Xavi has been a vocal critic of Mourinho tactics, while he also hit out at the Portuguese coach for his treatment of international team-mate Iker Casillas during his final months at the helm of Madrid.

How old is this interview? It can't be a recent one. Surely he's still not butthurt from Chelsea and Mourinho until now?

i dont know why xavi is hating so much just cause teams found a way to beat his team he starts having a rant. i mean come on every team loses one day and you just have to take it. look at bayern munich, they lost to mam city but you dont see any of thier players makingna big deal out of it.

@man_utd: Because of Mourinho's comments on Barcelona, Spanish League/Press, Casillas and friends, etcetera etcetera. So maybe he hasn't forgotten those comments and is still lashing out on Mourinho.

Don't be surprised. This isn't the first time Xavi's lashed out at other teams/players for not playing with the "Barcelona philosophy". He's, quite literally, to arrogant to suck up a loss against Mourinho's Inter and Di Matteo's Chelsea. In fact, it was Xavi's own Barcelona that "didn't play at all" when our friends Sergio Busquets (against Inter) and Daniel Alves (against Real Madrid) that helped them "win" their Champions League semi-final matches. And let's not forget that Xavi's own 2009 Champions League legacy came because Chelsea were cruelly cheated out of a repeat final against Manchester United.

@dynastian98 , you are so spot on ! All this success Barcelona got in recent years in Europe has been plagued by referee scandals . Some outrageous unfair calls that favored Barcelona to reach finals of Champions League. That goes back to 2006 AC Milan and Chelsea and Arsenal (arguable Lehmans straight red card) . I understand when it happens on one occasion but it literally happened every year against different teams always big decisions that favored Barcelona and impacted outcomes of the match even during time when they did not reach final of Champions League . It all went on until last years Demolition by Bayern . If I was Xavi i would not brag much due to the way they won their Champions league titles .

I think of this this way : "I understand Xavi's frustration . First big blow was made by Di Matteo . Meanwhile constant improvements in Madrid by Mourinho was already shifting balance of power before semi final against Chelsea . Mourinho showed to other teams final solution against Tiki Taka . Not only Mourinho found the way to defeat Barcelona tactics he also showed how to dominate them . Other teams took notes . If you watched Bayern match against Barcelona, you probably noticed how they almost looked like Mourinhos Madrid . Other team like PSG almost defeated Barcelona with similar style but they needed little more courage. Unlocking this tactics affected Barcelona not only tactically but also psychologically . It also affected Spain due to similar style and tactics that have been implemented by national team . Spain and Barcelona have not as convincing as they used to be according to their old standards . That is why I think Xavi is mad . "

Weird to see such an amazing and "smart" player doing such idiotic comments about both coaches. How on earth could someone compare Mourinho and Di Mateo, even if just compared on playing style.

I hate tiki taka sh!t and Guardiola style of play, possession is the main thing, so slow, so boring.
Everyone have taste even in tactics and of course, Barca is not the best...

Actually Bayern will become the most hated club if they win CL this year, it is more about jalousy than other things.
We have the best driblers of the planet, so if you dont want to get cards, dont hit players that many times and ruining the game.Haters ;) dont cry.... Real Madrid are the team that has been helped the most by refrees as simple as that.
Complaining about red cards ? You will see that with Ancelotti there will be no red cards in the Clasico so the problem is not Barça.
Chelsea fans dont cry, you were leading 1-0 in your home against 10 Barça players and were parking the bus, you could try to kill the match and play like Men on the field, but you thought 1-0 would be enough.

I understand if a Chelsea player would complain about 2009 it was clear hold up, but they got some justice when we go the unluckiest game against them.

RM fans let your anger exit, the most arrogant fans of the world are RM fans and i know what im saying.
Always bringing history back and wanting best players everyday.
The Inter game, 1st leg there was 2 offside goals of Milito and a goal refused for Bojan in the second leg. but Nobody is talking about that.
If you are sad about the red card, tell Pepe to stop being an animal like Mourinho wanted him to be.
We are proud of our playing style, as Arsenal City Dortmund and Bayern should be proud of theirs, results are more important but when you win with playing a beatiful football its better than the ugly style Mourinho teams are playing.
Every journalist asks Barçan players about Mourinho, maybe if they stop asking them, players will stop insulting him.
ohhh, and all the rumours being about Messi departures is from RM magazines as usual, your team used all the methods to win but still behind dont get offended. ;)
Go googlise guys you seem to have forgotten what was said about Barça by Mourinho, every loss he let his frustration exit inside and outside the field.
Always playing dirty football at injury time when there is no hope for them, remember Marcelo vs Cesc, Ramos vs Messi 2 times wanting to injure the player. Mourinhos RM was the ugliest and the less fair play Madrid side of history, i would paste you hundreds of bad reaction after all humiliations ;)

Marcus Lehmans red card ? That was a goal but we got back only a free-kick dont you remember?
and what would you expect when Lehman was the last player.
You know what, i dont care games are played on the field what butthurt fans are saying out of the fields after games are insignificant.
Those players have won 3 CL, 6 Ligas, 1 World cup, 2 Euros and plenty of other titles in less than 10 years...
So yes they have mostly cheated ;).

Cash doesnt buy you Class, ask Perez and Abrahamovitch.

@Tiki_taka , I think you took this thread too personal . This thread is going little off the topic but for sake of football talk . here we go :

Football is contact game and physicality very much part of it. That is one of the reasons we love it !

Bayern was hated club before due their monopolistic ambitions in Bundesliga and transfer window .

We are talking controversial decisions that favored Barcelona and decisions that completely changed the course of the match . Inter first leg there were equal amount of wrong decisions that went either way but one goal from Milito can be debated due to angle cameras show he looks offside . Either way Inter could have been 1 up before that if onside Millito clear to go on one on one , was not ruled offside . Second leg that is where the big controversies started especially with blatant dive by Busquetes and red card at early stage of the match . Later Piques offside goal . Eventually Inter went through and it was only fair .

Real Madrid clearly was robbed in 2011 . Dani Alves rediculously good dive and then in second leg Mascherano's brilliant dive . In the Same year Van Persie's ridiculous sending off early in the game . Marcelo knocking Fabregas did not injure him nor did affect outcome of the match same goes with Ramos , however i condemn both of the challenges they were out of frustration and such things happen with Barcelona players too just because Barcelona gets a good image by the media does not mean all the players are angels there .

Little off with events going in chronological order but I think you will catch on . 2009 Chelsea we both agree if I understood you right , was the most disgusting controversial win ever in any major European competition . You are talking about we got our revenge and we were lucky . Yes to some extent . Fabregas brilliant dive almost took it from us but thank god Messi missed that penalty .

2006 . Chelsea Del hornos sending off in first leg deserved yellow but not straight red ! Del Horno played ball first then tackle happened not intentional . AC Milan Second leg Shevchenko goal that was not counted due to Puyols dive . 2006 Final Lehman's red is debatable , it is red card but same time referee killed the match . You can scratch that off because we are talking about how Barcelona always reached it is finals . It never has been without big controversies.

I tried to be as neutral as i can. It was my analysis . If you want me to back them up with videos , I will do it . However topic of the thread was how come Xavi is still sore about Mourinho and Di Matteo .

Play like men on the field? Being defensive and playing physically is how you play as men. Not by diving and doing lots of pointless passes.

Marcus, you hate Barça. Its the only way i can explain you remember only mistakes that maybe were on their advantage. Im not gonna argue about refreeing since i remember mistakes for us and against us.
The 4-2 game against Chelsea the 4th goal, John Terry goal, there was a clear foul on Valdes but as i said, no hater will remember those moments, actually i think Pepe and Lehmann deserved their red, RVP maybe no.
But all teams were helped one day by a controversial mistake by the ref.

CHELSEA AND RM DIVING LEVEL is as good if not better than Barça, if we return back to history of those teams there will be enough things to be said, but i dont have to do this.
Visca Barça, i hope they will continue to destroy other teams and makes hate around them.

Nani red card agaisnt RM ? Liverpool inexistant goal against Chelsea ? We got 3 CL and every year its about few things to win or loose the game, all i can say that we deserved to win in 3 finals, we didnt make a hold up at the final game and many of your teams cannot say the same.

^ That was the main reason you lost, no Iniesta goal = No elimination. Get over it.
Do you prefer this instead ?

Why being neutral here ? Hearing biaised comments, crybabies, when you loose, you loose. The ref is human being and made dozens of mistakes against Barça and all teams.
If we are debating about using cameras, no problem but saying that Barça sucess is due to 2 or 3 controversial mistakes ? Than the level of converstation will go very low...

just watched the interview and I could see in Xavi's eyes the highlights from the Barca-Inter semi final games. He is still butthurt just like many of you said.. Just as all of those who say that Mourinho's defensive playing style is boring and is a disgrace to football. Mourinho is one of the best ever coaches because of what he has won, nobody really cares how he won. Barcelona fans claiming he played parking the bus in the second leg of the semi have to remember how they played in the first match. Mourinho's Inter was defensive only when they needed to be, a few matches and specially against Barcelona. Remember they trashed Bayern in the final. Inter was nowhere near Chelsea parking the bus. Chelsea's CL and Inter's CL cant be compared, it woudnt be fair in any sense.

I have to admit that Barca's playing style is way more entertaining and Xavi may be right about Mou not leaving a legacy, but after watching the interview I still have no idea why they came up with Mourinho as a conversation topic.
