What would you have done? (case RvP)

First, I wanna point out, that I'm not asking this because I'm extremely mad of RvP's transfer seasons ago, just saw these comments in Daily Mail (where comment section is better than the actual articles).

"This man could have been a legend if it weren't for that little boy
inside. So many have a Premier League trophy to their name but precious
few become legends. United fans are already forgetting him and he's lost
more love from Arsenal fans than he will ever gain elsewhere"

"He got his PL medal, but he'll be a forgotten man in a few years .. Just
look at Anderson, Cleverly... etc. RvP could've been a legend , a
premier league one club man."

So basically the point is, would you have those 250k a week, 1 PL trophy and forgotten name in future. Or 120k a week, a legend in the club and FA Cup & (possible PL trophy in future? (I know, possible))

What would you've done in RvP's shoes? Try to be as objective as possible, think about yourself and forget that you're a fan of Arsenal or Man Utd, it's not about that.

Would've moved to United to play under the worlds best ever coach sir Alex and when he retires he's not gonna go up to his kids and say " look I'm a premier league legend " he would wanna show his achievements winning the BPL. Also he is a club legend coz he has over 100'goas for Arsenal and he's their 8th highest goal scorer in their history. And he earns more money which he can feed his family.

Appreciate your opinion, but I have to say he is NOT an Arsenal legend by any means.

Yeah I know what you mean about that just like Figo moving from Barca to Real Madrid. But you've gotta admit he has done a lot for your club. Got you champions league by carrying Arsenal in 2011-2012 season and was the clubs top scorer on 4 occasions I belive.

" look I'm a premier league legend "
But, he's not a Premier League legend tho, neither Arsenal legend anymore. Gerrard never won EPL, isn't he a legend?
"And he earns more money which he can feed his family."
Yea, earn over 120k per week, for 7+ years is really garbage, poor Robin, he can't live with that when most people don't even earn that much in a year which he got in a week while he's injured and not doing anything.

Well he probably needed more money because he has too many household appliances to pay for. Also he is a premier league legend. He has stayed in the BPL for over 10 years and has scored over 100 goals for club. So yeah I'd like you to do that for your club.

Also if van Persie left Arsenal for " money " then why would he join Man United? Other clubs such as Man City were offering him more money but he declined them. The sole reason why RVP left Arsenal was because he wanted to win the Bpl title which he believed he will never achieve under arsenal.

If you think you can't pay for house with earning over 100k per week for years, than sorry but, you know nothing about money. Okay back to year 2011

  • "I know you can win trophies in many countries and in many ways, but I want to do that in our way and in an Arsenal shirt. I'm sure I could win things at another team in another country, but would it feel like our trophy, my trophy? I'm not sure it would. Anything we win here will come from the heart and that's what I want. It's my dream and I see no point in speaking about other teams when I have these dreams. I think other people know that about me; I'm just hungry to win with Arsenal and that's it."*

And player who is saying this and then leave for rival is not a legend for me, neither for probably any Arsenal fan.

Van persie in 2011: " I never said that "

I would move to United make money , win medal then comeback with a medal and replica EPL cup , then walk into Wengers office and just dropped it hard on his desk . Turn around leave to Arsenal's practice session for the next match .

I thought Van Persie did really bad thing by moving directly to a rival club . I sort of disliked him for that but then if you think about , you could understand him . He was nearing his peak of career with no trophies and in United there was a guarantee that he will win titles. Now , he has another chance to win title , FA Cup . He is swimming in cash and he will definitely won't go down forgotten in history of EPL and United , and Arsenal .

I would stay at Arsenal. But that's taking in the fact that I know Sir Alex would retire. RVP did not know that. In his mind, he was going to be part of a team that will contest for trophies for years to come. But Sir Alex did retire after one year, and he is now left stranded.

At Arsenal, he had the manager's trust, the players' respect, and the fans' love. That's more important than any trophy. Just ask Francesco Totti if he regrets staying at Roma. I'm sure that if he had the choice to do his career all over again, he would still always play for Roma. That's the type of player RVP should've and could've been.

Well, it depends what I would do. If I was a childhood fan of the club I play for and/or truly loved this club, I wouldn't move to another team just to have a PL medal to my name. If those requiremens were not given though, I'd probably change clubs in order to be able to win silverware. Obviously I'm not an Arsenal expert, but I do believe that RVP treated Arsenal unfairly, because he arrived here at a young age and had to cope with a lot of injuries, yet Wenger and the fans always believed in him and gave him a lot of confidence to become a world class striker. I understand that football means winning trophies and earning money for a lot of players, but I still lost a lot of respect for him when he moved to United.

It is difficult to say. When he made the move, he was at the peak of his career. Given his current form and stats, you can make a clear argument that he is on the decline. Would he have been able to win the PL trophy or contribute significantly to the UCL run with Arsenal had he been Arsenal's first choice striker, instead of Giroud? I highly doubt it. Lets remember that he was 29 when he made the move and he contributed a huge chunk of his career to Arsenal who weren't necessary delivering the trophies that he desired. Personally, I wouldn't have made the move because Arsenal were willing to give him a significant wage increase at the time, and I believe that there are more important things in this game than silverware. There are intangibles which can give you legendary status, respect and happiness among the fans without necessarily the medals. Pedro has won more trophies than Gerrard, but will he go down the history books as a bigger or better player?

Now there was a context, Arsenal werent signing any reinforcements while fresh mney teams like City and Chelsea were joining the race and splashing money, The club policy was to restructure the club and save money after building the stadium. As a competitor, you cant fight with less weapons than other stars while you have the choice to perform everywhere, what he did was normal but he shouldnt have gone to United wich were Gunners archrivals at that time.

Wenger's loyalty at the same time was amazing, Perez came to him while he just bought CR7, and offered hm the best salary in the world with full club management, he stayed loyal to the club while he was aware of the limitted budget of next seasons, and brought money to the club by keeping CL ticket in hand.

It depends on what matters most, the club love or the career, he didnt left formoney i think but we never know.

@tiki As soon as the stadium money was payed off we started bringing in 'big' transfers. Ozil,Alexis,Debuchy, Welbeck(16 million is huge for Welbeck)

Being Van Persie, if you are not a die hard fan of Arsenal then set your goals straight. If you wanted to win more trophies and earn more money then joining United was the right choice.
