Since I was intrigued by the comments on the Mikel thread, I'm curious to the players in recent memory you would consider to be "club legends". Here are the ones I have down.

Here's a question for Arsenal and United fans: What about Robin van Persie? There's no doubt in my mind that he's one of the most talented players to ever put on an Arsenal shirt, but his move to United works against him. But for United, one could argue that he was the lone difference between United and other English teams in 2012/13. That season was magical from RvP.

Another question for Arsenal fans: What do you guys think of Cesc?

Don't all Gunners hate Cesc?

As for Van Persie, not really. I mean, he was great for us, but one league title isn't anything to get super obsessed about in comparison to United's history. Add in that he underperformed (relative to what was expected) in his final two years, I'd have a hard time slapping the title of legend on him.

Ashley Cole was legend for Arsenal too .. Best left back Arsenal ever had .. best left back England ever had ..

@Sunflash I know right, van Persie, ok (for Arsenal), I can understand to a certain extend, but Cesc? No freaking way, especially when he ended up at Chelsea.

@Marcus2011 I mean, he played more game for Chelsea than Arsenal and considering he switched from Arsenal to Chelsea, can't really expect them Arsenal fan to be fond of him. XD

RVP is not a legend for me.

@Sunflash I don't know, with Cesc is more complicated. I don't hate him, when Wenger said he is not going to re-sign him back so what were Cesc other options? Considering Arsenal denied him, you have to move on. But since he has paid for his own transfer to Barcelona, that says a lot..

He is Arsenals youth product .. one of the vital players of the notorious invincible team .. sh*t the guy has left big impact on the club ! He just left the club in time ! Good for him ! It took Henry another year to realize that Arsenal are in for title drought ..

I'd consider Sanchez a legend to be honest. He drags us to things.

Cristiano Ronaldo is considered a Real Madrid legend, and it's how he considers himself. During the first year or so, he was considering himself as belonging to United, but that has since passed. At Manchester United, he could be considered as the biggest talent, won his first Ballon D'Or but he hadn't done anything yet to be looked upon as a legend of the game. Real Madrid is where he transformed himself from biggest talent of his time, to one of the best players to ever played the game. Whether he would have gone on to become that in United is debatable, but irrelevant because that is not what happened.

It's the same situation with Zidane. He made his name with Juventus, but his biggest accomplishments were done while he was wearing the all whites of Madrid. Therefore he's a legend of Real Madrid, not Juve.

Just to add on to this..

I'm surprised just how many people here aren't mentioning any of the lesser known players from before 2000's. Makes me think you guys either only recently got into the game or rather young.

Here's some players to add to your list:

Roberto Baggio
Sinisa Mihajlovic
Predrag Mijatovic
Romario
Seedorf (won CL with 3 different clubs)
Bergkamp
Laudrup
Rivaldo (as much as I hate what he did against Turkey in World Cup)
Gheorge HAGI! (What a player! Even though he played for the team I hate the most, even more than Barca (Galatasaray), you couldn't help but admire him) The ultimate number 10.
Davids
Stoichkov
Papin
Zola
Del Piero
Batistuta!! (added him in the post above, but still..) He had a rocket of a shot.
Jay Jay Okocha!! (I have never seen a better dribbler than him. Neymar, Messi, Ronaldinho? Nah.. Jay Jay Okocha was the best).
Eric Cantona (You think CR has an ego? You should've seen Cantona)

Beckham is definitely a legend. On and off the field for MU.

ANDDDD PARMA:
Hidetoshi Nakata. Considered the greatest Japanese of all time, one of the very few asian to make it to the world class football in Europe. Made his remarkable milestone there before apprciated and bought by Roma to be next to Totti

I would add Tony Adam to Arsenal and P. Viera Adam is the typical English face of the club, was and always the symbol. Viera, anyone remember the nightmare he brought to Arsenal's mid?

And for Juventus: Claudio Marchisio, Giorgio Chielini. Both long life servant, earned lots of things and absolute example for generations of clubs to follow.

@amir: do you mean he's Milan's legend?

To me he's also Milan's legend. But he did really a lot for Juve too... he's actually for Juve's fans to decide

Yes, that is what I mean exactly. Also might not agree on Neuer and Muller, same with Ibrahimovic at Milan. Quite a few better ones for them to be honest.

@Dynastinian: I saw that, and I kinda disagree with the 10 years :D. 10 years is not enough to define a legend. I think 20 years would make more sense :D

@amik_keal Can we agree on Italian legend at the very least?

0
Emobot7 8 years ago

@Tuan_jinn The point of this thread is not to define every legend there is, but rather, those in "recent memory" as Dynast said in his first post. Not saying there aren't any legend beyond ten, its to limit going too far down with the sheer number of legend mentioned in this thread.
