What a Robbery that was ! James Rodrigues or Thomas Muller or Matt Humels would have deserved more . Even Neur had a better world cup ! Talk about bias FIFA trying to cement legacy of Messi by handing out trophies left and right since 2009 .... smh

Robben and James deserve it a bit more, and Muller was decent. But Messi also deserves it.

Those players you mentioned have players around them and played as a team. Messi has no one, his best mate was Di Maria and he was out the last most important games. Argentina is a joke overall, but quite decent defending when they play defensively.

Messi literally dragged this team up, that's probably why he got the award!

Who cares ? He didnt even look to the trophy...

Im furious, Whys subbing Lavezzi ??? Aguero did simply nothing, Palacio cant controll a ball properly, Higuain offside or selfish...
They had so many chances, the first half should have given a goal to Argentina...

They lacked quality in the bench and Di Maria, Messi cant play forward without him, cant make the pass and be there at finishing...

Higuain, Palacio and Aguero were crap, Mascerano was impressive and Messi did more than i was expecting for him... Very unlcky, even if the German are deserved winners.

Gotze changed from a flop to a national Hero, Congrats.

Actually I felt sorry for Messi, in this game, so many time he ran up and ran back because the other did a silly pass or dumbly lost the ball... he needed ball the create his usual spark... Argentina just couldn't play...

Maradona is right, Aguero cant act like a man, he enter in the second half and never defend as he was playing the whole tournment....

Why subbing Lavezzi ? was he injured ?

@Marcus has it absolutely right here. There's absolutely no need to give Messi the trophy. First of all, he didn't deserve it (hasn't scored a single goal past the group stages), and his legacy is already cemented. I'm furious that he got it. 50 years from now, people are going to look back and be like "Oh, Messi won Golden Ball in 2014 WC. Where was Ronaldo? Oh that's right, he didn't even make it past the group stages. Guess Messi managed to match Maradona's feat". He didn't even come close to matching Maradona. Invisible for about half of the games.

If Messi wins the Ballon d'Or for 2014, I will be furious. He's going to have to be outstanding in the first half of 2014-15 to deserve the Ballon d'Or.

Did James Rodriquez had better players around him ? Or Arjen Robben ? Deserves it for what ? Scoring goals against Nigeria , Bosnia , and Iran ? smh

I feel sorry for James Rodriquez , Arjen Robben and several german players who deserved it more . Messi came out a took the award like he did not even want it . I hope deep inside he knows how much undeserved it was for him to win it and to show such a careless look for the award was just ugly when players who really wanted could have got it but thanks to FIFA again.

As far As Aguero I was so happy to see him come out for Lavezzi , like you all noticed his defensive work rate in City was always pathetic and he did not disappoint here .

  • Speaking of which, Bastian Schweinsteiger put in a performance of a lifetime here. He's going to go down as a German legend at this rate. Him, Lahm, Klose, and possibly Neuer in a few more years.

I think he was most fouled player on the field today ! What a performance , resilience and spirit he had shown on the pitch ! He was like a General on the field leading attack and defending like a lion . I think they are already legends after this final for sure .

@Bogdan, Dynastian & Marcus : +1

Messi doesn't deserve it, plain and simple. it feels forced, like they didn't want him to finish the competition with empty hands. not fair.

@Tiki
please mate stick to the topic: Golden Ball. match considerations can be made in a different thread :)

Schweinsteiger put in a fabulous performance today. He wanted it more than anyone. James has been incredible and he scored 6 in only 5 games with at least a goal a game. Although I don't like Robben that much, he was at his best for every game and was threatening all defences he came up against. Muller, Kroos and Hummels were great all round and Schurlle did really wwll when called upon. Messi didn't score in the knockouts but he was great in the group stage. Neuer was incredible once again and that brings me to Navas and Howard. Ronaldo and Neymar weren't up to scratch for me.

Hummels, Schweinsteiger, Neuer, Navas, Howard, Muller Schurlle and Pogba Sanchez and many more had great World Cups however my vote would go to Robben or James.

“Right at this moment the award is not important to me. I don’t care. We had wanted to win the trophy and celebrate with everyone back home in Argentina,” Messi told reporters in the Mixed Zone after the game.

“After the game we put in, we deserved a little more. It’s painful to end on the losing side after playing like we did because we were so close to the penalty shoot-out. It’s been a while since Argentina has got this far – we haven’t got past the quarter-finals in other editions. We’re upset at not being able to win the game, and there will be a lot of people giving us a hard time about it.

“Germany had control of the ball but we created the best chances. We were a little unlucky not to have put those chances away,” he continued. “We had three clear attempts: mine, El Pipa’s and Rodrigo’s but the ball didn’t go in. Now we have to look forward to the future”.
