Sturridge set to undergo Liverpool medical

The Chelsea striker is booked in for a physical examination at the Reds' Melwood training ground as he prepares for a €14.7 million move in the January transfer window

The Englishman will undergo a physical examination at the club's Melwood training ground but is believed to have already agreed terms on a deal with the Reds.

Liverpool have also reached an agreement with Sturridge's club, and are expected to pay €14.7 million for the 23-year-old forward.

The Anfield club are eager to secure the attacker’s services as soon as the January transfer window opens, having played the first half of the season with just one senior striker in Luis Suarez.

However, with Fabio Borini expected to return to training next week following his recovery from a foot fracture and Tom Ince likely to join Sturridge in making a move to Merseyside, Brendan Rodgers' attacking options will be given a significant boost ahead of the second part of the campaign.

Former Manchester City striker Sturridge has been restricted to just one start this term, with misfiring forward Fernando Torres preferred by both Roberto Di Matteo and his replacement Rafael Benitez.

The Birmingham-born forward made 28 starts last season, scoring 11 goals despite often being deployed out wide.

...Well, uh, the thing about the big strikers, eh... hehe, I've got no clue why we couldn't finally get our big striker :P. My only (bad) guess is PSG and Monaco outbid us for Cavani and Falcao.

Come on man, admit it. We're not. The only two loyal players we have are Terry and Lamps and they too would probably leave if we didn't win trophies or pay them a lot. If we were the mid-table Chelsea from the 90s we would never have the players we have. That's modern football for you.

I totally disagree, so in your logic Drogba isn't loyal ?

David Luiz for instance turned down Barcelona's transfer move for Chelsea because he is happy playing for a big club like Chelsea that he loves. The whole spanish media and fans were going nuts for a week for the "Who turns down Barcelona or Real Madrid"..

Loyal to the club? Of course he is. But if we didn't have Roman, if we didn't have the glory and the fantastic players to help Drogba shine, do you believe he would have stayed as long as he did Chelsea? The answer is crystal clear. No. He wouldn't have been loyal to the club. He would have either saw out his contract or forced a move to another team. If you asked Drogba in the year 2000 if he knew anything about Chelsea Football Club, he would have probably said I never heard of them unless he was a Premier League fan.

David Luiz didn't turn down Barcelona. Chelsea turned down a David Luiz bid. But yes, he has stated he loves being here. Yet still the same goes for him, if we were the mid-table Chelsea of the 90s, David Luiz would have most likely been a Manchester United player.

I don't live with "IFs" I'm sorry. Dude this is insane lol we have been top 6 since 1995/96 what are you talking about? What facts are you talking about? If you want to play with "IFs" then If any big club in the world didn't pay the high wages for their top players they wouldn't play for them then.

You're proving my point. For the majority of the 90s, Chelsea were a mid-table club. Until Ken Bates started acting like Roman and piled up debts almost leading us to our demise in the start of the 21st century.

"If you want to play with "IFs" then If any big club in the world didn't pay the high wages for their top players they wouldn't play for them then."

Exactly. There is rarely loyalty from a player nowadays. That is why I completely believe that most clubs that fail to remain a big/financially powerful club consistently, will lose their best players and will not attract big name players. Look at Liverpool, Ajax and Arsenal. All three prove my point in different ways.

David Luiz:

"There was a formal offer from Barcelona but I decided to stay at Chelsea," he told The Sun.

"Dani Alves and Neymar were sent to try to convince me to sign, but I was clear with them I was staying. "It was not Chelsea's decision, it was mine."

That doesn't change anything. All that says is Barcelona were just tapping up David Luiz. Chelsea still would have rejected the offer. This isn't a sport about loyalty anymore.

Willian, Moses, Lukaku, Lampard, Drogba, Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Luiz, Cech, Cole, Eto'o and even Terry. Do you really believe these same players that supposedly hold the club very close to them would be here without Roman's money and Chelsea's recent glory? Even if you don't agree with 'IF' type questions, there is no denying these players wouldn't be hear had Chelsea not been bought by Roman.

The same goes for all big clubs. Manchester United, City, PSG, Monaco, Barcelona, Madrid, Tottenham and Bayern Munich. They all wouldn't have the players they have if they failed to dominate Europe during this age of football.

Modern Football.

Selling Sturridge is definitely the worst thing we did in january. Selling Moses could be the 2nd worst.

Ok it seems you got the point about the big clubs spending high wages on those players. so nothing really changed since it's just an What IFs.

But for your IFs you made Chelsea fans be like:

Believe in our players mate, at least we didn't sell Drogba to a rival and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't sign for any. all the names you mentioned above wouldn't sign with any EPL club ever. we don't have this kind of characters in our club.. FYI We had Terry & Lampard before RA.

@netsten We didn't sell Moses. He is on loan at Liverpool for a season.

These IFs speak the truth. They aren't just 'IFs', they're facts. You talk about Drogba not going for a rival and that is true he didn't, but I was talking about when Drogba just joined Chelsea. Not after his relationship with the club became unbreakable. As for Lampard, don't forget that he almost left Chelsea in 2010. Lampard to Inter Milan was going across all newspapers. If it wasn't for his mom may she rest in peace, Lamps could have been in Inter Milan right now. and if memory serves me correct, even Terry was close to leaving at some time during the transfer window.

"As for Lampard, don't forget that they both almost left Chelsea in 2010. Lampard to Inter Milan was going across all newspapers"

and you simply believed that rumors ?

I'm done. :) I'm not the type of man who argues for longer than 5 mins. especially when it's like this. I'm sorry mate. peace.

Rumors?

"I nearly joined Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, but mum always told me not to forget my debt to Chelsea"

Lampard said that.

How could you have not known about this? It was all over the news in the transfer window at that time.

"I nearly joined Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan" Just because he has a good relationship with Jose Mourinho at Chelsea that's all. But what matters is he didn't.

Yes you're right. What matters in the end is that Lampard didn't leave, but that quote proves my point. How even the most loyal of players can simply walk away from their club.
