Rivals at the world cup (who will go further then who)

There are lots of teams with a close or heated historical rival also in the tournament, and some without.

Netherlands and Germany

Netherlands group:
Spain
Chile
Australia

Germany's group

Portugal
USA
Ghana.

Last appearance for Germany : 2010 (Semi final)
Last appearance for Netherlands : 2010 (final runner up)

Both teams have had to recently deal with the agonizing feeling of getting so far yet achieving little, with so much promise.. both teams end up falling flat in the closing stages. This time around, both teams look perfectly capable of getting far into the tournament once again.. may they even meet each other? They both have a group with formidable opponents (Germany's being Ghana and Portugal, Netherland's being Spain and Chile) but are still both likely and expected to be at least second in their group's and press on far into the tournament.
My opinion : too close to call, if both play as expected, they could end up being forced to knock eachother out.

Last competitive match vs eachother : Euro 2012, Germany 2, Netherlands 1.

due to character limits, i will do the rest on separate posts on this thread.

Japan- South Korea

Japan's group:
Ivory Coast
Greece
Colombia

South Korea's group
Russia
Belgium
Algeria.

Last appearance for Japan : 2010 (Round of 16)
Last appearance for SK : 2010 (Round of 16)

Two rising forces in the soccer world, these two teams have captured the hearts and imaginations of their own people and football's underdog lover's ever since the 2002 world cup, and both nation's football both domestically and nationally has been on the up. The two nations go toe to toe for many different honors, Asian cups, AFC Champions league's, East Asian cup's, and bragging rights of who did better then who at the world cup. Though South Korea still holds the edge in the club scene as of recently, Japan have been edging out South Korea on the national scene, winning the Asian cup in 2004, and 2011, and the east asian cup last year, despite Japan's glorious national success since the new millennium, South Korea have never been far behind, fighting and contesting Japan tooth and nail every time. This time around, the odds seem to be heavily against the Korean's, as they have to contest with the powerhouses of Belgium and Russia, while Japan has a more open and even group to fight through. Asia's two superpower's are not to be underestimated though, as they fight for every inch and never let up, easing up and underestimating them has proved to be disastrous for many teams in the past, and the world cup is the world cup after all, its not without its shocks.

My prediction: Japan going farther then Korea, Korea being eliminated at the group stage and Japan going on the the Round of 16.

Last competitive match vs eachother: AFC Asian cup 2011, SK 2- Japan 2 (3-0 to Japan on penalties)

Sure. :)

England's Group:

Italy
Uruguay
Costa Rica

Argentina's Group:

Iran
Nigeria
Bosnia and Herzegovina

Last Appearance for England: 2010 World Cup (R16)
Last Appearance for Argentina: 2010 World Cup (QF)

Argentina and England are two of the bigger guns from World Cup history, but neither of them are a nation which has sustained success at the highest level. However, the rivalry between the two has been fierce and personal on many occasions.

It was in 1982 that the two nations had been at war over the Falklands Islands, and this understandably soured an otherwise unremarkable relationship. In 1986 the two met in the Quarter Finals of the World Cup, with Diego Maradona earning both fame and infamy for his performance; one goal clearly scored with the hand, and another cemented in football history as he dribbled his way through 8 players to score, and send England out. Maradona later admitted his hand-ball, but attributed it as the 'Hand of God', declaring it to be justice for Argentina's swift defeat in the Falklands War.

In 1998 they met once again, this time in the Round of 16, for the first time since the infamous 'Hand of God' by Maradona. England were eager to exact revenge, and an 18-year old Michael Owen produced one of the goals of the tournament to open the scoring, but once again infamy was the reward for one player as David Beckham petulantly lashed out at Diego Simeone (current manager of Atletico Madrid), who proceeded to then fall over and pretend to be injured. Beckham was sent off, and the game ended tied at 2-2, with Argentina once again going through; this time via a penalty shoot-out.

Only four years later, in 2002, the rivals met for the final competitive time to date, in the tournament's 'Group of Death', and it was Beckham's turn to celebrate as his penalty proved to be the only goal in a 1-0 victory for England in a hard-fought Group Stage battle between two of the tournament's favorites.

A friendly was played in November of 2005 as part of the lead-up to the 2006 World Cup, in which England prevailed 3-2 thanks to two late goals by Michael Owen, but aside from that the world is still waiting to see a new chapter in this heated and curiously political rivalry, especially with the emergence of Lionel Messi as the potential successor to Maradona this year, in Brazil (the only nation Argentina likes to beat more than England).

Armed with his magical left foot, Argentina should conquer their group with ease, whereas England will count themselves well-proven, should they manage to get out of their Group of Death, but one can only hope that this will be the year that we see history be made once again between these two venerable nations.

Argentina-Brazil-Uruguay

Argentina's group:
Bosnia
Iran
Nigeria

Brazil's Group:
Mexico
Croatia
Cameroon

Uruguay's group:
England
Italy
Costa Rica

Argentina last appearance : 2010 (QF)
Brazil Last appearance: 2010 (QF)
Uruguay last appearance 2010 (Semi final)

South America's big three, with their rich footballing history and status as pioneer's of the international game, it is always interesting to see witch one of the trio does the best, and it is always a wonderful day for a neutral when these three teams meet each other in competitive tournaments. Uruguay has drawn the short end of the stick in this year's competition in terms of group's, as they get two heavyweights in the 4 time winners Italy, and the always resilient England. Argentina and Brazil have been given easy groups for their standards and are expected to top them easily. Brazil may have the biggest advantage of all however, with the home field advantage all tournament round.. but both Uruguay and Argentina border Brazil.. they will have enough supporters to fill that void. Argentina is expected to go far with their terrifying roster of superstars, while if Uruguay makes it out of that hellhole of a group, they do have the players, and the will to get far once again.

continuation of above post

My prediction: All 3 teams have the firepower to get far,
Uruguay's chance of getting into the knockouts is 50/50 with their group,
Brazil are an immovable object at home, and Argentina has an extremely talented
roster. Can go any way.

Last competitive matches vs eachother

Brazil- Argentina: Word cup qualifying 2010 (3-1 to Brazil in
Buenos Aires)

Brazil- Uruguay: Confederations cup 2013 (2-1 to Brazil in semi
finals)

Argentina-Uruguay: World cup Qualifying 2014 (3-2 to Uruguay in
Montevideo.)
