Possible 2014 WC squad
Heisinburg 12 years ago
Manchester United 67 1516

Sooo much talent in England atm, it's hard to pick out the ones that could represent their nations next year. So I want to hear what you think a country's squad will look like in next year's FIFA World Cup in Brazil!

I'll start for England (others can do England as well). Just be in mind this is my CURRENT thought of England's future. It will most likely change as we move further on this season.
GK:
Joe Hart
Jack Butland
Fraser Forster

DEF:
Ashley Cole
Leighton Baines
Chris Smalling
Joleon Lescott
Gary Cahill
Joleon Lescott
Micah Richards
Kyle Walker

MID:
Steven Gerrard (C)
Scott Parker
Frank Lampard/Michael Carrick (depends whether or not Lampsy retires)
James Milner
Alex Oxlade-Chamerlain
Aaron Lennon
Theo Walcott

Jack Wilshere
Tom Cleverley

FW:
Wayne Rooney
Jermaine Defoe
Danny Welbeck
Daniel Sturridge

Your turn...

I agree with the squad. My first XI would then be:

                       Hart
Walker -- Cahill -- Lescott -- Cole
             Carrick -- Gerrard
    Lennon -- Wilshire -- Walcott
                     Rooney

I know that some folks are gonna do a flip at seeing Walcott on the left, but I have reasons. His pace is fantastic, but often when he goes to the by-line his cross-ball is not the best. I'd prefer to see him cutting inside and using his right-foot for shots and in-swinging crosses instead. Lennon in the meantime is a little jinkier, so with him and Walcott feeding Rooney balls into the box, and Wilshire spreading passes from the center, I'd be happy.

Bench: Butland, Baines, Smalling, Richards, Lampard, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Welbeck

@man_utd, Stekelenberg is dutch...
@Lodatz, I had trouble debating to myself whether I should choose either Lescott or Dawson. Michael Dawson is also a player I admire, but seeing that his regular gaming seems unlikely now with AVB's management, I just chose Lescott instead.

@Heisinburg: It's a toss-up, to be sure; I agree with your reasons for choosing Lescott though.

@Lodatz: I would replace Carrick with Lamps, and Oxlaide with Walcott. I agree with the other players, I just hope they will go far in the WC, because I really like England and their performance yesterday was good, too. But actually I'm afraid that it's gonna be like in 2010, were they played shitty. England isn't really a tournament team like their biggest rival, Germany. They're never going really far, but t that's only what I remember from recent tournaments. Hope that Roy will finally turn them into a potential WC winner.

@JuanMata10: The reason I'd start with Lamps on the bench, is because of how highly I rate his versatility. He can cover for Carrick, if needed. He can replace Gerrard if needed, or Wilshire too. Because of that, as a manager, I'd see how the game was going, and where Lamps could be brought on to change the game, if that makes sense?

As for England, heh. I think they've been badly mishandled, formation/tactics wise, ever since 2004, but that's a long rant, so I'll just keep it to myself. ;) Like you, I'm hoping Roy can start to use this team the way they play in their clubs, and restore our dignity.

@Lodatz: You definitely have a point there, but I think Lampard should play from the beginning, at least in every second match(or in every match against strong opponents), because his fitness won't allow him to start in every of them. But let's hope that Carrick will keep his current form until the WC ;)

@Fred: With respect, I think that team is way too imbalanced and would easily be overrun. You shouldn't create a team consisting entirely of your best attackers.
@Lodatz: agree with your starting XI. It is the best XI at the moment. However, I think the back 4 is where the most changes could occur by the time the WC 2014 starts. Perhaps Baines will start if Cole starts to drop form and will Lescott continue to be frozen out of the City? Also, this may be premature but Jenko might get slip his way in there by then (even though I don't think he'd start). Micah Richards wouldn't even make the squad atm because he's been out too long and Uncle Roy has said he has to start beoing more consistent before he can start.
@JuanMata: I think it's a bad idea to start with Lampard. His stamina is not what it once was and I think he'd be much more effective coming on later (b/c he'd be able to exert all his energy without burning out AND because he could nick a late game changing goal).

@Footaholic: That's basically what I said in my previous comment, but maybe Lamps will try to work on his stamina, just like Beckham did. I also think that adrenaline will push him to top-performances and he won't really feel the tiredness.

Keiran Gibbs should be in the defense he has improved his game from last season. Not as good as cole or baines but could be a possible back-up if both get injured

@JuanMata10: I think there's some truth in that adrenaline part. Lampard himself has said how much more motivated to play in an England shirt he has become as he has gotten older, realizing he might not have very many appearances left in his career. I can see that motivation driving him on.

Hehe, I still think that tactically he'd be better used to watch/change games from the bench, when we need a spark, and let the younger lads do the bulk of the running.

@Footaholic: Good point about the back 4. Really, we have a lot of players in defense at similar levels of ability, so those changes could well take place.

@ramaboy, nice starting XI, but I have to disagree about putting Lampard in the starting XI.
I don't think Lampard is no longer physically capable of competing against players at the top level in the beginning of the game, plus his stamina is deteriorating due to his age. If I were the manager, I'd put him as a sub because unlike the manager, Lampard's intelligence and experience can help him analyse the opponent's weaknesses, and then show results during the second half as a super sub. For tactical reasons, it's best for Lampard to come as a sub.

Patrício
Pereira - Alves - Pepe - Coentrão
Moutinho - Gomes
Nani - Danny - Ronaldo
Éder

Gomes is a really good talent so I'd place him in front of Veloso and especially Meireles who's chilling in Turkey. Pizzi, who's been playing fantastic for Deportivo and is very young, could play instead of Nani, but the fact is, Nani continues to show great qualities for Portugal. As for striker, Éder could be what we're looking for as he's putting plenty of goals for Braga. Oliveira isn't showing that special thing yet, and Postiga, despite being inside the top 10 goalscorers in La Liga, is getting a bit old.

@Golden: what about Rolando? Last year I watched some Porto games and he seemed to be pretty decent. But you're the Porto expert here, do you think he will be an option for Portugal as Alves isn't the youngest any more?

The Best Starting XI We have at the moment is this:

                                                                                  Hart

                                                            Walker - Cahil - Lescott - Baines

                                                                      Lampard - Gerrard

                                                                               Wilshere

                                                               Walcott - Rooney - Sturridge

Sturridge in wing? He's much better off as a striker. Personally, I'd put either Aaron Lennon or Oxlade-Chamberlain there. They can swing in more crosses for Rooney to finish.
