Leo Messi's Recent Form
Madridista11 10 years ago Edited
Real Madrid, Somalia 41 831

It's not a surprise that Messi's form dropped after his recent injuries. Leo has not been scoring as much lately, but his passing ability seems to be the same, or probably even better. The reason I've decided to make this thread is because I've heard people say that Messi shouldn't even be in the discussion when it comes to winning Ballon d'Or while "World class strikers" couldn't even pull off what he's done THIS year.

Messi's stas in 2014:
Apps: 57
Assists: 21
Goals: 45

I'm not saying that he deserves to win, however, with those stats, shouldn't he be in the top three?

His stats are indeed amazing, but you have to look at the accomplishments of other players as well.

Manuel Neuer was so damn good this year that stats don't do him justice (won the two German cups, as well as the World Cup). Robben was also phenomenal. He doesn't put up the numbers that Messi does, but he sure as hell puts in the performances (his World Cup campaign and his performances with Bayern are astounding). Angel di Maria has been phenomenal this season with both Real Madrid and Manchester United, absolutely world class (won 2 trophies as well, including Champions League). Diego Costa has also played a key part in Atletico's success, and is now replicating that form at Chelsea (helped underdog team to win La Liga).

Messi is probably in top 5 (his sheer talent beats Costa in my opinion), but I'd put it something like this.

  1. Ronaldo
  2. Neuer
  3. di Maria
  4. Robben
  5. Messi

Messi disappeared when his teams needed him most during this season, which is the relevant point in this debate.

I need to see Ronaldo's stats to judge.

@HorseAFC

Don't be so shallow to judge simply by stats.

Ronaldo in 2014: 50 goals and 14 assists in 50 games.

Messi performance/stats is still top 5 for sure, but it's quite low compares to his standard and as the matter of fact he kinda disappear in big games this year.

Robben has been consistently phenomenal in both club level and country level. Especially country level, the Dutch in the world cup has a no-one-expected anything squad, and we made it through amazingly.

Ronaldo has been consistent and a deadly scoring machine. No debate here.

I always find it surprising that Modric often is not acknowledge in the top 5 as much as he deserves. He's my most favorite midfield, too, simply stunning

  1. Robben/Ronaldo
  2. Kroos/Neuer
  3. Modric/Messi

Madrid fans, give Messi a rest.

He just leaded Barça to compete for the league until the last minute, We were eleminated from CL by Atletico, in 2 legs confrontations it could happened to Madrid too if you met them.
He just played the WC final and was 4 times MOTM in Brazil, he is just carriying Barça lately droppig deep and dealing with midlefield problems.

Yeah really he was very poor he shouldnt be even on that list.

Why they gave Ballon d' Or to Canavaro and not Etoo in 2006 ? ( CL winner scoring in the final, League winner, pichichi )
That was a world cup year and they had to give it to an Italian, then why 2010 Iniesta didnt won it ? It was Messi.
Now we are sure it will be Ronaldo because the pressure on them would be huge if they do not so, due to his followers.
While i think Neuer did a Legendary WC and should have won best player of the WC.

For me, Etoo should be angry because if Messi 2010, Ronaldo 2014, then he should have won it in 2006 or Fifa wasnt keen on giving it to him.

If Messi disappears in big games than how about Ronaldo ? Copa del rey final ( injured ), CL final ( thanks to Ramos miraculos equalizer and Bale winner ), Clasico in Bernabeu of March ( inexistant except the PK ), last Clasico (Decent),
Super Copa against Atleti ( off simply off), last home defeat against Atleti, cant even remember if he played or was injured.
Where was Ronaldo in WC ?

If Ronaldo wins it its because of his inredible stats no debate here, then people should put the secont best performer in term of stats and add Suarez in the list, that would be fair.

Or Give Ballon d' Or to Bale who scored winners of big competitions Real won, or Neuer or depending on the criteria fixed.

Ronaldo will win because he was a goal machine this year as tuan said, and the second player should be the one with the best 2nd stats all arround the year.
Because the criteriashould be applied on both of them or nobody.

@Tiki

Your argument is ridiculous. Ronaldo has popped up in almost every important game of the season where he was fit.

Against Bayern, who was it that scored 2 goals and made the pass to Coentrao for Benzema's goal?
Against Dortmund, who was it that scored the third goal?
Against Atletico, who was it that scored 4 goals against them throughout 2014? Not to mention his stellar performance against them in the first leg of the Super Cup.
Against Schalke, who was it that hammered 4 goals and 2 assists past them?
Against Valencia, who was it that scored a last minute back-heel to help Madrid draw the match?
Against Sevilla, who was it that scored 3 goals, including 2 to win the UEFA Super Cup?
Against Barcelona, who was it that scored 2 goals and participated in all 3 goals in the 3-1 victory? (He scored the penalty, won the corner for Pepe's goal, and made the pass to James for Benzema's goal)

Top scorer of La Liga, top scorer of UCL, new record for most UCL goals, Golden Boot, La Liga Best Forward, La Liga Best Player, UEFA Best Player In Europe, Copa del Rey winner, UEFA Super Cup winner, and UEFA Champions League winner...

...and they say he doesn't deserve the Ballon d'Or.

  • "Give Ballon d' Or to Bale who scored winners of big competitions Real won, or Neuer "*

Nonsense.

"last home defeat against Atleti, cant even remember if he played or was injured."

Yeah, maybe because you don't watch Real Madrid.
