AMMAN, Jordan (AFP) — A 19-year-old footballer with Jordan's Al-Faisaly youth club collapsed and died during a match yesterday, the club said.

Qusai Emad al-Khawalda died from lack of oxygen after swallowing his tongue during the first half of the match with Al-Jazeera in Amman, Faisaly official Ihab al-Khalili told AFP.
He said teammates tried to revive Khawalda as they waited for an ambulance to arrive, to no avail.
"Our club regrets this death and conveys its condolences to his family and loved ones," said Faisaly director Ahmed al-Adwan.
He added that the club would be looking into why the paramedics took so long to answer the emergency call.
The club has postponed its next match out of respect for Khawalda's family.
Two years ago, Faisaly goalkeeper Zibn al-Khawalda, was killed in a road accident. Both players were from the same extended family and the same village, in Jordan's northern Mafraq province.

"died from lack of oxygen after swallowing his tongue during the first half of the match"... wait, what? How does one swallow ones own tongue? Did he bite it off?

Very strange

One can't fully swallow his/her tongue but it can block one's airway while unconscious or while suffering a seizure, however this is commonly referred to as "swallowing" the tongue.

@Footaholic that's common thing as Zak said, it can happen when you're in shock.
"The head of Faisali’s medical team, Nader Zu’bi, said the player died of asphyxiation as his tongue blocked his airway when he fainted."
