If you were to find out that your favorite football player is gay , how would you react ?
Marcus2011 11 years ago Edited

Do you think there are there big number of gay players or do they even exist in top Leagues ? Would you stop supporting him or would you just loose interest or despite all of that you will still continue to cheer and idolize him ?

Should football players come out if there are gay players ? Do you think football world is ready for open gay footballer ?

No , I am not gay or homophobic , I was just wondering after I saw Hamsik dress if he is gay and what will be fans reaction .

Just being curious about this forum opinion , I had little debate with my friend .

I honestly wouldn't care really. Athletes like Jason Collins who comes out usually get a lot of support.
I imagine it would also be the same for footballers.

Wouldn't bother me one bit. Homophobes and racist people make me sick. The less of them the better.

Hamsik probably got dared to dress like a drag queen and had the balls to go through it. Props to him. If he does happen to be gay and enjoys cross dressing then good for him, who cares?

Not a big fan of homosexuality (personal reasons, and I'm not a homophobe), but if Zidane came out to be gay..... I wouldn't really care lol. As long as he keeps his personality and continues to have success as a manager, I don't really care what his sexuality is.

The answer should be obvious, anyone who would change his mind about someone after knowing this person is gay has to seriously take some time and think about it until he gets it right.

It's a real problem that gay footballers can't be publicly open about their personnality. But I guess that football being a popular sport compared to tennis for example, people who watch it are less open to it because they are in general less educated. But the sooner we get rid of homophobia alltogether, the better (in sports, in politics, in the everyday life).

If one my favorite players were gay had the guts to come out and announce it, it would give me another reason to admire him and support him.

Edit : about hamsik, it was a halloween costume, of very bad taste but still a costume. And gay men don't wear dresses by the way. Cross dressing is something completely different from homosexuality.

I'm not against homosexuality - love is mysterious and a human loving another human is nothing wrong, however, I'm also not for homosexuality either. From my experience, watching a man kissing another man is an unpleasant sight and it gives me the creeps. If my favourite footballer turns out to be gay, then I'm fine with it as long as he doesn't make such a big deal out of it for his career because a profession has nothing to do with personal life.

Can't say I would be very happy, but it's OK. He can live his life like he thinks is best. What matters the most is the performances he delivers on the pitch.

@dynastian98 Never ever will ever cross my mind Zidane being gay .

My opinion
Just like few of you said , I also think that private life should be to himself . He does not have to come out or should come out in public if he is homesexual . Just like any straight player should not come out and say he likes females . Keep it private and outside of the work . Football players are role models for fans and their sexual preferences should not be public .

Reason why I would still cheer for the player because he does not have the control of his desires and it is not lifestyle choice . I also do not think that person was born to be gay genetically , but if he was "born to be footballer " no one should question his sexual preferences . That matter should be kept to himself and he should share with people he loves or daily interacts .

Some people are into fcking animals , maybe there are footballers who like doing animals but does it mean they should make it public ? I don't think so . Imagine the look on the little football fan hearing that hearing that his favorite football star likes to do goats in spare time .

As far as football gay numbers , I think there are small number of gay footballers. For example , I have my suspicions about Juan Mata . However , again I have no right to question his sexuality and it should not be discussion in the media . We all know media forcing them to open up by bullying them with false or true stories . It is wrong and unethical and immoral.

So, I don't want to know which gender my football player likes to take to bed after football game . It is not my business and it should not concern me and it does not concern me . Although , I would change my opinion about the player if he makes it PUBLIC and make it a huge thing in the media . We love football and last thing we want to think about is who those footballers fck in their spare time or which one of them gets fcked . Like I said they are role models for millions and publicly announcing their sexual preferences should not be on the news.

Therefore people who encourage football players to come out about their sexual preferences are not doing anything good for them or football world . It should be private . Simple .

P.S. Also think about the player starting to act and talk like gay after match just because he came out publicly . That to me is making a huge deal and unnecessary commitment at your work place.

@marcus you are wrong. If football players would come out being gay, it would help people accept homosexuality. The proof that people aren't comfortable with it can be found right here on this forum. From what you and some others have written I can guess that you are not totally accepting homosexuality. And that is a problem. If your role model comes out being gay, maybe that will make you realise that gay people are the same as us, and that it is okay to look up to someone who is gay. Not only you but everyone that watches football.

It is like racism in football, the situation has greatly improved in the last decades thanks to players speaking up and fifa's campaigns. And that has helped not only football games but the general football audiance to improve as human beings. Because all of this has pushed a very negative image on racism, most of football fans know it's not okay to be racist. If players and fifa would speak up and push a very negative image on homophobia, it would make the world a better place.

And it's not only about homophobia it's about accepting people for who they are and not treating them differently. I don't need to hear about the sexual activity of gay people, but I don't need to hear about Ribery and Benzema having sex with an underage prostitute either.

What is important is for everyone to understand that gay people are the exact same as heterosexual people. I have several gay friends, male and female and they are just like me.

@KingHenry

You are wrong. The people here did not say that they do not accept homosexuality. They just state that they are not an avid supporter of it. Almost everyone on this thread stated that they do not care if their role model turns out to be homosexual. That means that we are accepting of homosexuality, but just don't feel (hesitant to use this word here) "comfortable" with it.

@Marcus

I absolutely agree. +1

@dynastian I'm not saying people are homophobic, just that, just like you said, they don't feel comfortable around homosexuality. You don't "support" homosexuality, the only right thing to do is accept it. And that is a problem, people need to get comfortable with it so everyone can treat eachothers as a fellow human being.

I feel like the main reason why you guys aren't comfortable with it that you don't really know what it means.

@KingHenry

(This is turning into a scientific POV here) Well, I don't feel comfortable with homosexuality simply because I find it odd. Us humans were born as either a male or female, with different sets of sexual organs. All simply for the task of reproduction. Males and females feel attracted to each other because of an animalistic urge to reproduce.

Now my opinion is that if male organs were made to interact with female organs and produce offspring, what does a male organ interacting with another male give you? Does it give you offspring? No, it doesn't. That's what I find odd.

Don't get me wrong, I treat a homosexual man or woman the exact same way I treat people who are heterosexual. I just don't feel comfortable with the existence of it. If a famous professional footballer is homosexual, he should keep it to himself. Leo Messi doesn't go around saying that he's heterosexual. Why need to confirm it? It's a part of his personal life. If a footballer realizes or comes to grips with the fact that he's homosexual, he should just keep it professional and not get the media involved. It's part of his personal life............................. the media is there to question about his professional life.

@heisinburg I am not gay, I have had a girlfriend for a long time. I just try to be openminded and to defend the right way of thinking when I can. And because I care about this forum, I like talking about it.

@dynastian What do you make of contraception then ? That's not natural and no offspring comes off it. We are not animals, we are humans. Love and happiness are the only things that matter (cheesy but true), so be it a man and a woman or a man and another man we should all learn to respect any kind of relationship.

I assume you don't know too many gay people that are close to you. I guess the best way to get comfortable around it is to have gay friends. You only wish the best for your friends so if it means him getting a boyfriend you're happy with that. One of my best friend from high school was gay so since that time I have no issues or taboos about gay people.
