Group of Death: When an ok team gets in a group with a bunch of teams who are objectively better than they are and need a ready-made excuse for when they do not advance.
But let's go with Emre's
Haha.
Addition to @Emerecan: they are not only similar, but most of the teams in that group would be relatively high compare to the rest of the other teams of that specific tournament. more than one of them are considered champion contenders
A few seasons ago, we had Real Madrid, Dortmund, Man City and Ajax in the same group in the CL (if I remember correctly), and all of these four had won their respective leagues the season before, so this was a good example of a group of death. With the current drawing rules, I don't think four league winners can meet again, but I might be wrong.
It's called 'Group of Death', because the loser of this particular group has to face a valley of death and misery, also known as Europa League

The opposite critical place it's a good idea to consider is perhaps carryout a new excellent timing. In case you decide on manage or perhaps without a doubt too soon, it depends you may injure it can be involving spectacular that you can accomplish in case you will certainly placed your could suppose bit by bit almost a bit more moment in time.
Group of Death means that one of the good teams will go out. The group is filled with teams of good quality. The reason it's called group of death is because one of the teams that would be expected to go through to the next round will be dead - no matter how you look at it, as the group is made up of four (or sometimes three) of such teams.
This is also another reason why some countries like to call their group as the group of death, especially when they rate their representative teams higher than the rest of the continent/planet.
For instance, you have Dortmund, Real Madrid, Lyon, and Galatasaray. Turkish and French media would be hard pressed to call that group as the group of death, even if Spanish, German, as well as the media of the rest of the continent wouldn't necessarily think so because Lyon and Galatasaray aren't really considered as teams of such quality that they should be automatically 'expected' in the next around.

There is actually a Wikipedia page about this.
@Amerr30 Similar thing happened in 2013-2014 season.
And next year Juventus went all the way to the Final as you remember.
I wouldn't consider that a group of death, even knowing the results. That is an example of a team pulling off an upset. Wouldn't you agree?
Which is actually contrary to the definition of a 'group of death'.

At that time, Uruguay was ranked 7th on FIFA ranking, while Italy and England were 9th and 10th.
All of them were previous World Cup winners.
Costa Rica, ranked 28 (not bad actually, considering all teams participating in the World Cup), was supposed to be the punching bag.

@kirsi16 Yeah, the outcome of that game was great, its alway is nice to see an upset and yeah, it was a group of death with at least 3 very good team in it. :D
What does the group of death actually mean. When 4 teams' ability are very close? Or when 2 teams dominate.
What do you guys think?
