Barcelona can't play in La Liga if Catalonia becomes independent - Tebas

There will be a referendum on Catalonian independence on November 9 and the Spanish FA president believes Barca and Espanyol will be ousted from the league if it passes.

Barcelona and Espanyol will be ineligible to play in La Liga if Catalonia becomes an independent country, Spanish FA president Javier Tebas claimed.

A referendum will be held on November 9, with potentially destructive results for the 22-time Spanish champions Barca and neighbours Espanyol.Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) president Tebas said a 'yes' vote would make the two clubs' participation in the Spanish top flight illegal.

"Barcelona and Espanyol would not play in the Spanish League if Catalonia becomes independent for the following reason: the Sports Act has an additional provision that only one non-Spanish state can play in La Liga or official Spanish competitions, and that is Andorra," Tebas told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

Tebas conceded if Catalonia did become independent, changes to the law secluding Barcelona and Espanyol from the league could be put on the agenda."For that to take place there would need to be a change in parliament and we'd need to see if the affected industry would agree or not," Tebas said.

On the issue of match-fixing, Tebas confirmed the LFP were investigating a fixture between Elche and Malaga - one of six matches under the microscope."I have not believed what has been said for some time now. I think it's been increasingly evident in recent times," Tebas said.

"Some dressing rooms are taking extreme weight from above. I don't know if Spanish football is prepared to see a player go to jail for a year, but there will definitely be penalties, just like the ones you see in other countries."We are investigating the Elche-Malaga game, but this one is a little different.

We are looking at two [or] three players from the Malaga team but we're not sure about Elche yet. "For the last four years, we've got six games that we're investigating. "People want us to have a clean game. I haven't received a call from any manager who has taken issue with what we're planning to do."

La Liga without Barcelona would be too easy for Real Madrid and it will become the same as Bayern München in Bundesliga.

If that really happens...Barca would win in Catalonia and Real or Atletico in Spain.I also heard Basque wants to move from Spain, and Andalusia too.

They'll figure it out 100% sure. Barca will play in La Liga even if they'd belong to Catalunya.

^Exactly. You guys aren't actually going to believe that Barcelona won't play in La Liga if Catalonia becomes independent, right? You know how many powerful politicians back them behind the scenes? Strings will be pulled and they will remain in La Liga anyway.

Monaco still plays in Ligue 1 despite being an independent country, so why won't Barcelona. They have too much history in La Liga. Nevertheless, it would be great to see Madrid win more trophies, so I hope Barca go to their own country LOL.

I would prefer to see them stay in Spanish league, but if its impossible then i would love to see them playing in France :).
Secrets agreements are being made with PSG in this direction, but these are speculations, i dont think Spain could give them independance because the basc will do immediately the same.
La liga is becoming strong and very competitive, its not the best time for leaving it. At the same hand, both Real and Barça will loose from it, because their fierce rivalry is secretly their biggest strenght, Clasico tickets and TV rights are raising every year, the most watched event these last years...
I believe those 2 arch rival clubs know that they need each other to stay competitive and see their benefits on the raise.

Barca can move to Greenland and will still play in La liga. They'd have to be crazy to kick them out.

First of all, I see the independence very unlikely in the near future. Second, like decentK and Vendetta said, Barcelona can be as independent as they wish to be but Barcelona will keep playing in La Liga because of the economical bondings between the team and everything involving football in Spain. Not having Barcelona in La Liga will end up being catastrophic for the league economically.

Barcelona will never want to play in a different league, it will end in a bankrupt because of media sponsorship money and stadium ticket sales will drastically changing.

Despite threats from La Liga chiefs that separation from Spain would see them booted from the division, the Camp Nou club have signed a pact supporting the referendum.Barcelona have backed the Catalan region's right to vote for independence from Spain.

There have been suggestions from the Spanish Football League (LFP) that Luis Enrique's men will be booted out of La Liga should the Catalan region, of which they are at the heart, become a new country.

Such comments appeared to make the Camp Nou club reluctant to show support for the independence campaign and they were criticised by some fans for refusing to speculate on the "sensitive issue" following a board meeting on Monday.

However, Barca have finally shown their hand ahead of the referendum on November 9, which could lead to a full-scale separation from Spain vote in the near future.

"FC Barcelona have signed the Catalan national pact for self-determination," the club said in a statement on their website. "FC Barcelona formalised their adhesion in a formal letter from president Josep Maria Bartomeu to the pact co-ordinator Joan Rigol.

"The pact brings together over 3,500 organisations and associations from a wide spectre range of social and political positions which endorse the Catalan people's right to self-determination."

Barca defender Gerard Pique was under fire during this latest international break for showing support for Catalan's independence.

If La Liga eject Barca from the division following independence - something even Real Madrid's rival stars are against - Ligue 1 has in the past been mooted as a potential new home for the prestigious Catalan club.
