Too late :).
@tiki: I thought that it wasn't until next year's competition that the EL winners will go to the CL?
And sure, it would be nice and prestigious to win it. However, if the price we pay for that is to end up throwing away points in the league, it's not worth it. We tried this last year, and if not for a couple of those midweek hangovers, it seems a dead cert that we'd have gotten ourselves the 2 points needed to secure 4th spot.
AVB was a good chap, and did us proud. Part of the steel we showed today against United is directly attributable to his tenure. It's a shame we've been so hard-hit by injuries, or else we might have seen better results, especially now that the player do seem to finally be 'gelling'.
Still. 3 points off 4th spot, after 20 games. Still in the running!
Congrats lodatz, Tottenham is definitely CL contenders his year, an important win....
That was a 6pts game against a direct rival, and yes if you win EL, you are directly qualified to CL.
The new ruling will mean that England could have five Champions League places from 2015-16 if one of its clubs lifts the Europa League in 2015 and finishes outside the top four. This is 13/14.
Still in the running, but only a Spurs fan would predict they make it to the top 4. They haven't played good football this year, haven't scored many goals, and so far this season, there's no reason why they should make it, especially in a statistical sense.
@Faith until 2015 ? Ok i thought it was already applied to the next EL.
@Gustavo: I'm not sure exactly what 'statistical sense' you think they shouldn't make it. The table is about points, after all. Get the right number of points, and you make it.
It's all very well scoring high in the games a team wins, and feeling good about it, too. But ultimately it's the NUMBER of wins that counts.
For example, had we beaten Newcastle (as our play deserved, without a doubt), then we'd be above you right now, for all your high-scoring exploits.
No you wouldn't. If everyone was getting what they deserved in terms of their play, we would have more points and you would have less, despite a Newcastle win. And that's basically my whole point.
There's nothing to say that whatever form you're in now, that it will continue or be reproduced.
It's about the points but I don't think, in a season where so many other teams are playing so well, a team playing like Tottenham will be enough to get the points in the end. So far they've showed nothing to say that they deserve to be higher, or will be, or can be.
*shrugs*
Aside from a first ten games in which we conceded only 1 goal, aside from coming from behind to beat teams, away from home, and aside from having the best away form in the league, you mean?
There's nothing to say that your form will endure either, as it happens, so why are you choosing to pick on Spurs?
And actually, no, if we'd gotten the results we deserve (such as 3 points from United at home, such as 3 points from Newcastle, such as 1 point from Arsenal, and such as 3 points from Chelsea, we'd be above you anyway.
The entire argument is arbitrary. THAT's the real point.
The table will not lie. If we end up with more points than you, then it really makes no difference whatsoever whether or not you think you've 'played better' than us this season, because the simple truth will be: you wouldn't have.
We're 2 points behind you. If you want to be cocky about that, then go right ahead, though it's interesting that all that separates us is the fact that we conceded a silly goal against West Brom.
So, only someone who has a reason to dislike Spurs would say they don't 'deserve' to make it to the Top 4, based upon your nebulous definition of what that should be.
Also? You have the best player in the league, we lost last year's best player, and we've been decimated by injuries and trying to bed in 9 new first-team players. And yet? We're right behind you. Without Suarez, you'd be 9th, so maybe cool it on the 'great football' self-congratulation altogether, hmmm?
Yes it can be slightly arbitrary. But I don't like what you've been saying in the past couple pages, which I think is even more arbitrary, so i'm trying to set you straight.
"We're 2 points behind you. If you want to be cocky about that, then go right ahead, though it's interesting that all that separates us is the fact that we conceded a silly goal against West Brom."
No it isn't. Are you dumb? It's like you've forgotten that spurs aren't the only team that's playing in the league.
"So, only someone who has a reason to dislike Spurs would say they don't 'deserve' to make it to the Top 4, based upon your nebulous definition of what that should be."
My "nebulous definition" is what the quality of football I think will make it in the top 4. For example, in the beginning of the season Spurs were higher in the table, but almost everything about the way they played indicated that by the end of christmas they would be lower, and surprise (not) they're lower.
I have no reason to dislike spurs, but I do have reasons to dislike you.
"Also? You have the best player in the league, we lost last year's best player, and we've been decimated by injuries and trying to bed in 9 new first-team players."
Right, because we have zero injuries and no new players...
"Without Suarez, you'd be 9th..."
I don't understand how that's even an argument.
Have to say, irrespective of whether Sherwood stays in the long run or not, its at least good to see Spurs play the attacking way they usually did before AVB.
Liverpool are signing the 21 years old Mohamed Salah for a couple of millions (10m euros i heard). What a signing, Liverpool can do somthing special his year as Tottenham.
You forgot guys that the top 3 is not granted, maybe both Spurs or Liverpool can do it this year...
Wait and see.
"But I don't like what you've been saying in the past couple pages, which I think is even more arbitrary, so i'm trying to set you straight."
Ah, so you're being a dick just because I think City could have scored more against you. Good to know you're a mature fellow, and all.
"No it isn't. Are you dumb? It's like you've forgotten that spurs aren't the only team that's playing in the league."
It's like you didn't read the words that were written and pretended that your riposte had anything to do with them. We're two points behind you. Had we not conceded that equalizer against WBA we'd be level on points with you.
Are YOU dumb, or did you just skip mathematics at school?
"My "nebulous definition" is what the quality of football I think will make it in the top 4. Which is the stupidest thing in the world for you to say, considering that only a couple of games ago you were second. Oh lookie, did your 'quality of football'keep you in 2nd place? No, it didn't, did it? You lost to better teams, and then slid down to 4th. If you slip up on the road to someone else, and we grind out a 1-0 instead, we leap-frog you.
Your argument contains nothing whatsoever other than your insistence that, somehow, it's the WAY you've played which has opened up a 'massive' 2 point lead. If we've been so crap, you've only been 2 points 'better'.
See how this works? Good, because now you can shove this stupid argument up your arse, mate, where it belongs. :)
"I have no reason to dislike spurs, but I do have reasons to dislike you."
Well, it's good to see you finally admit that you base your assessment of football upon your personal opinion of a single fan. This raises your profile immensely, of course (not). See how cute this (parentheses) business can be? What fun!
"Right, because we have zero injuries and no new players..."
You have not had to bed in 9 new players, and have 8 of your first XI picks ruled out by injury, no.
"I don't understand how that's even an argument."
I know you don't understand it. But that's because you don't appear to be terribly bright.
2 points, pal. Get cocky about it if you like, but without your wonder-striker, you'd be nowhere near the Top 4, and you know it. It's funny how you've suddenly got your voice back, after one half-season of decent football (for the first time in years) from your team. Have a care for how precarious that can be... ;)
lol.
Ah yes, the 'I don't have any counter-argument, so I'll just pretend this amuses me' response.
Always plays out well on the internet, that one. ;)
@tiki: I agree Salah is a great player. He's one I've been salivating over for a full year now. I wish we had been linked with him. :/
Is it a reliable link with Liverpool, or just paper talk, do you know?
Its not done yet, they could buy him between 8m and 14M, Spurs Chelsea Juve and Everton are keen on signinf him but he is talking with Liverpool....
Nothing confirmed yet...
