Overall, I am not too upset about today's match. OF course, I really wanted us to win and we are now favourites to finish 5th and Spurs will finish above us for the 1st time since I began watching football.  That said, I really thought we did give it our best shot today and I am not sure what the Spurs fans think but I would argue that we probably were the better side for a good majoirty of the match. That said, they had one important component that we did not - clinical finishers. I feel we created more opportunities and played the better football but they took advantage of the opportunities they got and so they deserved to win in the end. It feels a bit harsh that we didn't get a draw, which I though would've been the fairer result but I'd to congratulation Tottenham on their win today. It was a good match to watch overall.

I dunno if I agree with that, Foot, re: better side.

I felt that Tottenham soaked up a lot of Arsenal pressure, and did well to take the sting out of the match when it was needed. The first 15 mins saw a great deal of enthusiasm from Arsenal, and they dominated those early exchanges, but watching the white shirts over the course of that first half, I think we slowly went up through the gears. First we were just clearing, then starting to play out from back, then turning that play into attacking moves, and then finally catching your chaps on the counter late on. With each ten minutes that passed, we were looking more and more in control, as slowly paced as things became.

Second half obviously you guys started well again, but after that, aside from some good runs, there were few shots on goal against Lloris; nearly everything was stifled before your forwards could let fly (5 blocked shots, for instance). By contrast, we had a ton of shots (and two goals that should-have-been, from Bale and Siggy), and it was our LACK of clinical finishing in the 2nd half that kept the scoreline low.

Not saying there was a clear difference in quality, at all; Arsenal did dominate possession, but I think that Spurs had a game-plan to stick to, and they did so, most especially the back four. I think we edged it on the day, performance-wise, and a draw would have been harsh on the boys in white.

First of all where were you both @Lodatz and Footaholic! :) We've been watching it here and chatting on TalkRoom. To be fair since I'm a neutral side, Tottenham deserved the 3 points and they wasted many clear chances the scoreline would have been at least 4 for them. as for Arsenal they lacked the first touch and I think Wenger should have started Podolski & Chamberlain instead of Giroud & Ramsey. Arsenal's defense were far from good they need to work on marking way better than this they gave a lot of spaces to Tottenham and you can't do that against Bale & Lennon. By the way i was supporting Arsenal so we could stay on 3rd place :)) Anyways Congrats to Tottenham. But It's not over yet, Because they got a tough matches against Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool & Everton so I would say it's not over yet :)

Possession possession. It's all I've seen from this side for quite some time now, yet they fail to put the ball in the back of the net. They're always left susceptible to a counter attack. The difference between Tottenham and Arsenal was the use of chances. Tottenham got to the box and drove towards goal almost immediately. Arsenal like to get to the box and hold possession there, almost never creating an open opportunity at goal. Most of the time their chances end in pointless crosses because the opposition knows that Arsenal like to play possession, with most of the team in the front, leaving the men out wide with little to no trouble driving the ball back down the field. Kudos to Aaron Lennon. Every time he had the ball there was a goal threat. Go figure that Arsenal's goal was basically an own goal. All in all there were even chances throughout the match, but Tottenham's were better calculated, and their squad is looking mighty fine this season.

Totally accept & Respect your opinion as well.  Here's some more of my observations.
I felt that we were better on the ball, and had better movement but lacked the quality in the final 18 yards. For me, those 2 goals you scored were against the run of play and those crazy 5 minutes decided the match.  The late chances you had I think were moslty because we were behind and had to go for it going forward. This of course, was very much playing into your hands especially with the counter-attacking pace of Bale & Lennon.

Some interesting observations:
No doubt your CB's were excellent (particularly Dawson who was my MOTM). Walker was ok. Assou-Ekotto was your weak spot.
I know he scored, but I was surprised at how quiet we kept Bale for large chunks of the match. For me, Lennon was the bigger threat on the night (he was on song).
On our side, I was surprised that Wilshere wasn't more influential. Again, like Bale, I felt that he was pretty quiert for most of the match. Also thought that Cazorla & Ramsey were awesome for different reasons. Feel a bit bad for Jenkinson being subbed as he did very well and was dangerous on the overlapping run with Walcott down the Right. I expected more from Rosicky who was EXCELLENT against Bayern but looked off the pace when he came on today. Giroud wasn't good enough but he worked as hard as we've come to expect from him. I'm glad that we tried to press high for most of the match which is something we haven't been doing. I can't complain overall about our effort and the manager's decisions today. You simply did better in the final 3rd and were not undeserved winners.

Congratulations on the win. It was a good match.

@Foot: I agree, it was a good game, and Arsenal have no reason to walk away ashamed, in my opinion.

I do have an observation I think it relevant to the 2 goals in the 1st half, though. I don't think they were against the run of play, mainly because there actually wasn't a run of play, by that stage. I found a download of the game to watch it again, and paid attention to the pattern of the first half in particular (watching the 2nd again now). Sure enough Arsenal started brighter, but as the half went on, there was less and less pace in the play from both sides, as Spurs soaked up the pressure (and even had higher possession percentage by the time of goal 1) and took the pace out of the game.

I think that was the game-plan, in fact. AVB has had the team do this before, to break up an opponent's momentum, is the thing. By the time we were into the 35th minute, there was hardly any flow to the game at all, and it was mainly just a back and forth in the midfield -- no end-to-end. I think  Bale's goal was only the 2nd shot on target of the whole match. There had been multiple forays by both sides, but both defenses were standing strong, up until then.

In the build-up to the first goal in particular, you can see Spurs just dropping back waiting, inviting in the Arsenal back line, and then as the move starts the Gunners try to press the ball to win it back. Siggy spotted the space that had been opened up along with Bale's run, and -- BOOM.

Obviously I could be wrong, and I'm not AVB, so I'll never know. But given Spurs tactics over the course of the season, that's why I think the way the half went was much more calculated than it might seem at first.

I'm prepared to admit that my glasses may be rosy, though, in this event. ;)

I miss Davids. Those 2 seasons when he played for us were awesome. Helped us get 5th for both seasons! :D

I think Sandro is more like him than Dembele, though. Very much like him, in fact.
