Liverpool and Chelsea meet this weekend in a clash between two sides that have struggled for consistency throughout the season, but still have plenty to fight for.
For Chelsea, this campaign has been far from the standards usually expected at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are used to competing near the top of the table and battling for Champions League football, but this season has been a major disappointment. Their chances of returning to the Champions League are now extremely slim, although European qualification is still mathematically possible.
Liverpool’s situation feels slightly different. The Reds still have a lot to play for in the Premier League table, with Champions League qualification and even a possible top-three finish still within reach. That makes matches like this almost impossible to lose if they want to finish the season strongly.
At the same time, Liverpool have hardly looked unbeatable themselves. Both teams have been inconsistent for long periods this year, and the gap between them on the pitch does not feel as big as the table may suggest. Chelsea still have quality in attack and enough talent to punish any defensive mistakes.
What could make the difference is Anfield.
Liverpool at home is always a different story. The atmosphere, intensity and pressure created by the crowd often push the team to another level, especially in big games. That home advantage, combined with slightly greater motivation, gives Liverpool a narrow edge going into the match.
It is difficult to predict how open the game will be, but chances should definitely come at both ends. Neither side likes to sit back, and both have attacking players capable of deciding games on their own. This feels like the type of match that could easily end 2-1 or even 3-2.
