Cracking game. Terrible refereeing though. He was handing out cards left and right all game and it couldn't have culminated in something more absurd
I kinda feel like VAR should be able to intervene if need be for second yellow cards as well instead of just direct red ones though. I don't think it's right to be able to get two players sent off as well as a penalty conceived *in the same sequence of play*. Surely there has to be a limit somewhere
Ajax will be going very far because they play good football and don't mind benefitting from a few own-goals? Your logic though. If you really know football, you will understand that playing beautiful football alone don't always win you titles. You also need a few decisions go your way as well. In Chelsea's case they were valid, emotions aside.
Both penalty decisions were correct, and Daley Blind would have been booked for that tackle from behind on Odio if he wasn't already on a yellow. He deserved his matching orders for that coward desperate successive tackles on TWO Chelsea players to stop Chelsea from going any further, not forgetting the meagre four minutes of injury time added on when it should have been at least 10. So if anyone is left on Footyroom with a functioning braincells ( I highly doubt it), who can explain to me how Chelsea were lucky I would very much appreciate it. I wouldn't hold my breath thought. I am not that bitter about coming out with a point even though we played 24 minutes (including injury time) against 8 outfield Ajax players. To come from 4-1down to claim a point is remarkable !
Fairly simple: To come back from 1-4 you need luck. Be that luck via stupid ref decisions or through studpidity of your opponents. In this match it was far more of the latter but still needed some luck in the ref's decisions, too. The yellow for Blind's second tackle was harsh but okay (the first tackle was completely fair and not cowardly at all, he was just quicker, take off your Chelsea-couloured glasses, mate!). And the yellow for Veltman was waaay over the top. Chelsea showed morale but they probably wouldn't have come back had the ref and Ajax not helped.

I thought we shouldn’t concede 4 at our homeground. I thought referee decisions equally went wrong both ways. However, main attention is again on VAR because yet again it fails. They used VAR to even out referees mess ups. Two wrongs don’t make it right.
Horrendous refereeing imo. Never a penalty, never a red card either. Ajax were the better team and should've won comfortably. It's insane how they were still going for the winner with only 9 men.
Never a penalty? then Azpi's goal should have stood. The second yellow was for handling the ball in the box. If in doubt, check other games where the ball was handled in the area, the offending player received a yellow card. Why was this any different? Chelsea didn't make the rules.
11 vs 11 Ajax 4-2, they were clearly the better side and wouldve most likely won comfortably until the referee ruined the game. Chelsea's 2nd half resurgence doesnt change the fact that they were still losing 4-2 and still struggled to a draw against 9 men

Chelsea had 10 shots on target and Ajax had 5, four of which they scored from, yet this numpty think Ajax"dominated" the match. Dominated what part of the match ? Possessions ? I think you will find in the stats above that Chelsea had more possessions that Ajax. Clearly, there are too many brainless idiots on Footyroom!.
Terrible decision on the hand ball. Not sure what he did to earn the second yellow which rather turned the game. Down to ten facing a free kick outside the box was enough.
That's your opinion and it's fully respected but the ref let play continue as there was the advantage for Chelsea and as a result the player handled the ball in the box. Do you expect that the ref take it back for an initial free kick. I don't know how fans interpret the game these days. If you however think that wasn't a penalty, then you'd agree Azpi's goal should have stood because Tammy handled the ball in a similar fashion.
In the champions league any hand in the box is considered a handball, until they change that we can't really say anything about it. The 2nd yellow on Veltman was for handball and dissent.

Thats a penalty everywhere not only in the Champions League. His hands stopped a shot on targed and were not close to his body.He also had plenty of time to get them out of the way but he leaned towards the ball with his hand.
His was leaning towards the ball with his hand. They were not close to his body.He clearly stopped a shot on targed with his hand. The shot was like 10 meters away from him so he had plenty of time to get them out.Definitely a pen.
What a match. When Ajax led 1-4 I was thinking game over, on to the next one and then the comeback happened that made me not regret walking away and not watch the match any further. Both teams played well particularly Ajax. Onana was strong in goal and OH, I like how Zouma ran from one end of the field to another and shot over the bar, what a goal that could have been if the shot went in. More time should have added at the end of the 90 mins.

3-4 with 1 red card do you think Ajax wouldve gotten a different result here?
We were all over them during the second half. What did they get robbed of?
@Footy_watch we won in their homeground and they drew in ours. So what embarrasment you are talking about? This is champions league level here not europa league level so 4rsena1 fans can fuck off!

10 men is 100x better than 9 men. The fact that they were away, down to 9 men and more than 20 mins to play, and still didn't lose to Chelsea makes them winners. Whatever the outcome might have been that second red card was a total BS and Chelsea still couldn't beat them.
I don't have to watch the full game to recognize the second red card was BS. I have nothing against Chelsea and I hope you guys make it out but the ref clearly helped you guys in this game.
The second yellow must have been as a result of the player saying something unpleasant to the ref. We await for any report on that. But the ref would not just send a player off with a second yellow for fun of it.
Update: the second yellow was for handling the ball which is a standard practice if a penalty was awarded.

@Footy_watch even before the red cards we were dominating them on all fronts. And you saying "even at 9 men they could've one" because they had one shot on target that Kepa saved is of no value. You can't use that and then say oh well with 11 men they would've won. That's all fairytale thinking. And if you think in this flawed manner then we (Chelsea) had 10 or so chances in the 2nd half so we "would've" won
Ajax were trying to run away with a cheap game.Scored 3 goals with 1 shot on targed in the first half and scored another sucker punch at Chelseas best moment.Apart from those goals Chelsea was the better side in both legs.
Ajax pretty lucky that Azpi’s goal was canceled out. Even with 11 men Ajax, Super Frank Team was already on the driving seat since the begining of the second half. It just matter of time for chelsea to find all the goals, Ajax center halves already crumbled. What a performances by the young James, perfect Attacking WB! I hope Next match frank would take that Alonslow off put Azpi on the left and go for Reece James on the right.
When I saw the lineup, I was shocked with the inclusion of Alonso. He proved me right during the game. Too slow in everything including decision-making. He might be the next to depart after Luiz as Lamps likes players who are quick in movement.
The fact that Ajax couldve won with 9 men shows they wouldve scored more without the help of the referee, like what bayern did to bottlenham. Abraham handballed it, nothing lucky about ruling the goal out

Why risk a penalty and getting carded?

Chelsea weren’t just handed an easy end of the game, they fought hard for it and scared Ajax into making mistakes
