In the case of a free kick, VAR is only available if the foul entails a red card. Croatian players did protest quite a lot after Griezmann dived, but there was no way the referee could rely on the VAR to support his decision, since it was not available to him in this situation.
In the case of a possible penalty, the ref can ask the opinion of the VAR assistant referee, or the other way round if VAR assistants see something that escaped the ref's attention. I must admit I don't know which way the VAR was used after Perisic's handball.
In the case of a goal being scored, the video review by the VAR assistant referee is systematic, so this Wolves' goal would never have been granted.
And at the start of this year's season, I clearly saw the match between Torino & Roma, when Torino first scored a goal, and everything looked perfectly alright, until we all saw the VAR replay, and realized that Falque was offside (even for just a little bit) and the goal was disallowed. Which ultimately gave Roma the victory. It would've been the same today on this match, if they had VAR, and saw what a clear hand goal it was! But there's a good reason why most of the (big) English teams voted against it!
SOmething's smelling bad in EPL!
