Way too many games are overshadowed by shambolic refereeing decisions. Watched the game live, and I just couldn't for the life of me understand how the penalty was given. To compound the utter disbelief, a red card comes out. Redmond arguably did tug Dele's shirt, but it happened outside of the box. He basically gave a penalty for redmond falling over. A real shame because whilst short on quality, Soton really fought in the second half to the point that you failed to notice they were a man down. Van Dijk played like a man desperate to put himself in the shop window. Towering header was then followed by poor defending for Spurs' first goal and haphazardly running with balls out of defense and then losing it. The scoreline flatters Spurs, but they had to win.

Joze, this happens quite a lot. Even in the North London derby.

I know it was last year. Paulista red card by Diego Costa actions.

The Red card is not due to poor referee decision, but due to the notion of "Professional Foul" !!

IMO at first glance it was a red. Watching the replay again, the tugging of the shirt obviously begins outside the box but he falls on him inside the box. It's still a Red card because he was the last man denying a goal scoring opportunity. So Redmond gets no brownie points from me.

The sad thing is however is that it ruined a peach of a game.

New turf on the spot. Watch the replay of the pen, and you'll see the grass lift the ball up just before Kane strikes it.

@Lodatz any excuse dude whether the turf was new or not there is no reason why he should have ballooned it like that...lol

It's not an excuse when it's the truth. Seriously, watch the replay of the pen and you'll see the grass lift the ball.

The penalty was fairly clear, but the red card was extremely harsh. Never a sending off in a million years. Don't think the scoreline flatters Tottenham too much though, considering they hit the woodwork twice (once from the pitch spoiling the penalty), and had 66% possession. Soton only really reacted well because the sending off was unjust. I reckon if the red card had not been given, Kane would have scored the pen, and Soton would not have had a fiery come-back. Still 4-1, just more straightforward.

Blame the FA. They are soo inconsistent in choosing the referees. In a north London derby, Mike Dean was the referee, even though he supports Tottenham. And the sad thing was when they scored the penalty he celebrated at the back.

That being said, the only mistake he actually done during the match was the red card. And I reckon Southampton pretty much gave up after their first goal. Two of Tottenhams goals were also bad luck for Southampton due to deflections.

@amir_keal. I believe that real professionals do their job with pride, regardless of who they support. I don't have an issue with referees supporting one team or another. Its pretty rare to come across a completely neutral football person. The one mistake? That's a massive mistake. Having a team go down to 10 men with still 30 minutes to play and 2-1 down is huge. Redmond did tug at Dele's shirt and the ref should've whistled for a free kick. But he decided to allow play to continue. When they get into the box, Redmond clearly loses his balance and falls. Despite his fall, Dele still gets his shot away. In such a situation, the ref should've gone back and blown up for a foul when the shirt tugging happened. If Dele got his shot away, how on earth could it then be a red card? preposterous

In my opinion, Mike Dean is the worst referee in the Premier League. Mike Deans last 7 Spurs games resulted in 6 Wins, 1 draw and no losses. He awarded 5 penalties for Tottenham, and gave 3 red cards given to opposition. By the new regulations, if a player has lost his balance and is holding the opposition, and the player is affecting his opposition, a free kick is awarded, by this case a penalty, Red Card? Never.

Their attacking intent was quite reliant on Nathan Redmond. In the first twenty minutes, he broke off on the counter a lot, which is the way Southampton plays. Once he was gone, it was a good as game over. Then again, did they try? Not really.

Also, Southampton's defense has also been a weakness. I don't rate Cedric as much as Clyne. Same with Fonte. Even Van Dijk, who I know can do a lot more, especially seeing what he has done previous games. But he is still one of the best defenders in the League, and there's no surprise Manchester City is interested in buying him.

PS: Didn't tell you this, but congrats on Coppa Italita, hope you guys can get top three this season.

@amir_keal. I always and hold back from venting my full fury at officials, because they're human after all. What it does call out for is more assistance. we need a video referee. I think it will ultimately happen, but it will take time. a referee on the sides with access to a video replay can sort out a lot of the issues and not leave fans with fury, resentment and a lot of anger post matches.

Thank you. Much appreciated. It is only the super cup, but it is more than a token trophy. That's two very good matches this season vs a very strong Juventus side. we need to get back to the days of leaving a psychological imprint on the opposition. The road is long, and the second half of the season will be difficult. We needed cover for suso and it seems we'll get deulofeu on loan.

That's true. I think they use video replays in the MLS 2 for things like offsides, fouls... What you said is right, it is a factor which should be considered more. And the Serie A is looking to be nice in terms of predicting the top 3. Hope to see the final outcome.
