World Football's biggest "What ifs"?

I recently came across an article featuring the biggest "What ifs" us football fans ponder on. It included some great "What ifs", but I want to ask you, what is you favorite "What if" question you like to ask about football?

Here's mine.

What if the Busby Babes never stopped to refuel at Munich?

We could have seen one of the greatest sides in history. Sir Matt Busby wouldn't have had to spend 7 years rebuilding their squad. Real Madrid may not have won 5 European Cups. Duncan Edwards may have gone on to be the greatest English player of all time.

These are thoughts that constantly go through my mind when I hear the words "Manchester United". So, what's YOUR favorite "What if" in football?

What if Chelsea got at least 1 penalty in the semi finals of the 2008/09 UCL season?

Great job guys! I got another good one.

What if Lionel Messi opted to play for Spain rather than Argentina? O.O

Anyways, try to make it a little more realistic. Saying, " [What if] messi , falcao , ronaldo , iniesta , xavi , alonso , alves , ramos , pique , marcelo and casillas  all joined united ? " is rather unrealistic. Try to be more logical. Here, I'll throw in another one.

What if Johan Cruyff played for the Netherlands in the 1978 World Cup?

The Netherlands went all the way to the final, and lost. Cruyff retired prematurely because of a kidnapping incident involving his family in Barcelona, and he wanted to stay with them rather than go to Argentina, where the country was ruled by a dictator. If Cruyff played, the Flying Dutchmen could've won their first ever World Cup.

what if liverpool expanded anfield to same level as old trafford during there successful spell in 80s. and what if houllier didnt waste 100m on crap such as salif diao, diouf, igor biscan, cisse, kewell, kirkland, cheyrou, diomede, heskey, song, camara etc. these are 2 biggest reasons why liverpool faded in the 90s and 00s imo. and therefore big reason why united are so good today

'What if Ronaldinho was 1000% devoting to Football and not at wasting his time at night clubs etc.. ? ' @donandres great one imo. never fulfilled his talent fully. could have been one of the greats but for me i will always remember him for what he could have been

No, Ronaldinho fulfilled his potential. He honestly became one of Barcelona's greatest ever, alongside the likes of Rivaldo, Cruyff, Messi, etc. The problem is, his reign at the summit of world football lasted far shorter than it could've. He only remained at the top for 3-4 years. Otherwise, he was outshone by C. Ronaldo, Kaka, and Messi. But it's definitely true that if he stayed dedicated to football, he would've gone down as one of history's greatest ever.

I think his reign was only a couple of years, to be honest, Dynast. No doubt he's one of the brightest talents the game has ever seen, and was rightly crowned the best player in the world at the time, but, he could have achieved so much more.

Whereas his fellow Brazilian (rival for attention) Ronaldo came back from seizures and broken legs to reclaim the summit of football time and again during his career, Ronaldinho only really had one spell. He shone at the 2002 World Cup, but it was too easy for him in Lique 1; it wasn't until that game-changing Rijkaard era at Barca that I think we really saw his genius, and then only until about 2006/2007.

I can well understand why there are fans who would consider him one of the greatest of all time, but I'm with ADSY on this one; I'll remember him most for what he could have been.

That's what I think as well. You see, the problem is that if I (as a Real Madrid fan) say that out loud, Barcelona fanboys will pounce on me talking sh*t about my team. So I tried to emphasize Ronaldinho's reign as much as possible, so I don't get verbally assaulted by Barca fanboys.
