Why Manchester United Won't Finish Top Four

I found a pretty interesting analysis on why Man United has been struggling this season.

Sorry I can't copy the article because it has gifs embedded into it.
I agree with this article. It is so true. Manchester United has been struggling for so long, just failing to complete the most basic defensive tasks. It is actually ridiculous. Thoughts?

They have no cohesive structure or gameplay. It's just a bunch of players trying to put together some sloppy passes and hope it results in a shot on target at one point. If they were really at their peak, the would be able to use di Maria and Falcao to the best of their abilities and score goal after goal. Falcao is one of the world's best strikers, and so are Rooney and RVP, but all three of them are struggling oddly at United under Van Gaal. Shows to me that Van Gaal isn't concerned in getting the best out of his three world-class strikers.

Everything would come down to important games, not only to the remaining games vs City and Chelsea but mainly vs Liverpool and Arsenal. If we manage to perform well in those fixtures then we can assure ourselves a top 4 finish.

The thing is, we haven't had a single performance we can be proud of this entire season tbh...

@Tuanis: exactly, that's a freakin sad fact. Without De Gea (and half of his incredible saves) we would be in the bottom half.

But we manage to get the right points, we might make it through...

Just the game play sucks so bad that I feel tired of watchin...

Btw, let's keep in mind that we HAVE NOT WON any game against any team in top 10 since 12/2014.

Now, that sucks.

@Dynastian98, I partially agree with you. Partially because I think there are some parts of the pitch where our cohesion and structure is strong (full-backs<->wingers; wingers<->strikers; defense<->midfield), but our links between the goalkeeper<->defense and midfield<->attack is sloppy and almost non-existent at times like you said. I believe Falcao is past his best. His knee injury has brought his prolific striking abilities to a halt as he doesn't even play like he used to. Lots of back against the defender and less mazing runs through the defense. RVP has once again suffered another injury set back so I am really starting to think that Rooney up front with substitute Wilson is our only choice. IF we can get results against Liverpool and either City or Chelsea, I have no doubt that the top 4 place is ours. But it will be difficult and will go down the wire to the 38th fixture. @tuan_jinn, I can't even remember the last time we beat City or Chelsea, although I think our chances of doing that are very good under LVG.

United will make it for 2 reasons : They got results despite playing bad, and it was like this the whole season, the second reason is that Spurs and Liverpool doesnt look doing the perfect final sprint, they also have problems maybe bigger than United specially in finishing and sometimes doesnt get results despite playing good...

Arsenal arent that far eaither only one point ahead so there might be another tickets for the race if Arsenal slow down, if So'ton get a result this week end they will be dangerous for the end because they have the easiest schedjule.

I think United and Arsenal would get their tickets at the end.

@TheGame

I read an interesting article briefly explaining Falcao's fitness and dip in form since his unfortunate injury. If I find it again I'll show you. It mentioned that Falcao's movement is still excellent. He still prefers to move past the shoulders of defenders, and his turns and pivots are more powerful now, even if they are slightly slower. The problem lies in the fact that he is misused.

Falcao is not a good shot-taker from distance, his hold-up game is OK, and his link-up play is mediocre at best. What he excels in is poaching. That's what made him renowned as one of the best strikers in the world. At Porto and Atletico, he was used primarily as a poacher and nothing else. I can vouch for him at Atletico because I frequently watched him. Costa, Adrian, and Turan were used to make runs into space and pass the ball off to Falcao to score. The United games I've watched this season involved a large amount of inaccurate and high crosses being put into the box with the hope that someone will magically head the ball in from 10+ yards. It's definitely not a situation Falcao prefers, especially when there are 4+ defenders in the box with him. The crosses that he prefers are more dangerous ones close to goal (as would every natural poacher) and he can finish it off with precision very, very well. Unfortunately, that is the only way he can be used. But he is so damn good at it that it's worth the effort. It's up to Van Gaal to decide whether to dump him or to change the team's style to adapt to Falcao's. Otherwise, he is simply a waste of money.
