Why do footballers "retire" when they are 30 or so?

Why do they do that? They're still fit and strong, even if they are old. My dad is 54, and he still manages to play with me, a GIRL who is 10. I mean, take Eric Cantona. He's A LOT fitter that my dad, but he doesn't do footy anymore.

because they dont have enough condition to play a 90-minute-match and i bet your dad is only passing with you and thats not exhausting

You may not understand it from your age but when you get older footballers lose pace and stamina. Your dad is able to play with you because you are still young. If you were to be like 16 years old, your dad will have problems catching up to you.

they have no good condition anymore and they cant handle every week a 90 minutes match and offcourse everybody can play football even if your 70 years old but that doesnt mean u can hold it that long on the pitch -_-

Playing professional football with grown men for 90 minutes vs. playing with pre-pubescent children. Yeah, that's a good means for comparison.

When players get fame and success at an early age they stop thinking more about improving their skill and ability and start thinking which Ferrari to buy and which nightclub to party in. They drink, smoke and stop paying attention to health to lengthen their careers. Eventually at 30+ they find themselves unfit, unable to compete with younger players and so their only option is to retire. Some consider getting into the coaching business.

@Bloodred1992, agreed, best example: Ronaldinho, a man with so much talent "destroyed" his career because of that..

When you start to get old, your body can't run 90 mins and the stress, press etc..makes it very difficult.

"Playing professional football with grown men for 90 minutes vs. playing with pre-pubescent children. Yeah, that's a good means for comparison." Hey now, that pre-pubescent girl may very well be Ronaldo visiting us on the boards here!

It's different playing ball with your son a few minutes, than paying a high intensity football match. You do see legend matches, for example "Real Madrid Legends" vs "Juventus Legends" they are old men, but all of them play at lower intensity and much slower football. They cant keep up with the younger players.

Yeah, professional football is quite different. Eric was a special case, because i wanted to follow acting career, that was different.

Btw, how does this thread get -5??? that's weird
