Why Cristiano Ronaldo's Ballon D'Or Sends the Wrong Message.
tiki_taka 11 years ago Edited
Barcelona, France 367 9768

Last month, Cristiano Ronaldo opened a museum in his own honorin his native Madeira. Last week, he accepted the award of -Grand Officer- of Portugal.
One might think that he would just retired, having won the World Cup for his homeland. Or maybe the Champions League. Or at least the Ballon d Or.
No, at the time of each of his recent honors, Ronaldo hadnt won a single competition with club or country since the 2012 Spanish Supercopa.
History can remember them as premature celebrations of his being named winner of the 2013 Ballon d Or, an award that sent a regrettable message to fans, aspiring footballers and especially Ronaldo himself: When discerning the wheat from the chaff, image is everything. Results hold little currency.
-He scored 69 goals in 2013- is the most common argument made in Ronaldos favor. This is an indisputable fact that, without further context, is enormously impressive. Some take it a step further and conclude that because of his goals tally, Ronaldo was therefore the worlds most decisive footballer in 2013.
He wasnt. In fact, he didnt decide a whole lot. There were five big matches in 2013 in which Ronaldo had a chance to play a -decisive- role for Real Madrid and Portugal: the second leg of the Champions League semifinal with Dortmund, the Copa del Rey final against Atletico, Septembers Liga clash with Atletico, Octobers Liga match with Barcelona and the second leg of Portugals World Cup qualifying playoff with Sweden.

      • The Big Games. + + +

Against Dortmund, Real desperately needed a leader, a hero to rally them as they sought to overturn a 4-1 first-leg deficit—and they nearly got that before their elimination. But it was not the rather harmless and off-form Ronaldo who was up for the challenge. Instead, it was substitute Karim Benzema who, following his introduction, brought bite into the hosts attack as he scored and assisted in a 2-0 win.
Ronaldo had a chance to redeem himself a month later in the Copa final and things began well as he opened the scoring. But Atletis defenders had his number and the underdogs came back to force extra time before going ahead on 99 minutes.
A more decisive player would have inspired his team to equalize, but Ronaldo let his frustration boil over and was sent off after kicking Gabi in the jaw.
Despite boasting the most expensive club squad ever assembled and allegedly the best player in the world, Real ended the 2012-13 season with complete and utter disappointment. They finished a whopping 15 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, failed to reach the Champions League final for the 11th consecutive year, despite facing semifinalists with a tiny fraction of their wage bill, and couldnt even claim the Copa as a consolation prize.
In August, a panel of journalists named Franck Ribery UEFAs Best Player in Europe; Lionel Messi finished second.
Ronaldo went on a tear at the start of the 2013-14 season, but once again went missing on the biggest stage.
In late September, Real were two points behind Barca and Atleti when they hosted their Madrid rivals. Ronaldo was a complete flop in that match, which Atleti won 1-0 following Diego Costas solitary strike.
One month later, Real were three points behind Barcelona as they visited Catalonia. Neymar stole the show, lifting Barca to a 2-1 victory as Ronaldo was again impotent. Real could have drawn level with Barca in that game, but instead ended the matchday third in the Spanish Primera, six points behind Lionel Messi & Co.
The turning point for Ronaldo in winning the Ballon d Or was Portugals World Cup playoff against Sweden. He scored a late winner in the first leg, then a magnificent hat trick in the second. Suddenly, all was forgiven.

Players and pundits cried out in unison: How could anyone else be considered for the Ballon d Or?

Been saying it for years! Great players show up in big games and influence the team in a positive way when they are struggling. Every team Cristiano is in, everyone else is just his sidekick. He'll never win a European cup or World cup and he'll never win another CL. He'll continue to score 70 goals a season in meaningless games and continue to win the meaningless Ballon d'Or trophy that just gives him a bigger ego. He's a good guy off the field but on he's not the best player by a long shot.

I'd like to encourage people to read this, because it isn't just highlighing Ronaldo, but football in general. Unfortunately people like Iraqi_Madrista will never understand that since he's too much of a Ronaldo fanboy. I admire Ronaldo too, but the Ballon D'Or was a popularity contest at the end, and how the world perceives football today is certainly retarted, which is why I don't appreciate today's football as much as the magic I saw a decade ago.

Thanks for the post, Tiki. The article made some very good points.

@Heis

I agree with you mate. But I find this article to be insulting Ronaldo too much with ridiculous naivety. That's why I dislike this article very much.

But back on to your topic, I guess we can sum it all up with the votes of the captains of the clubs.

Ronaldo

  1. Falcao, 2. Bale, 3. Ozil

Messi

  1. Iniesta, 2. Xavi, 3. Neymar

Kompany

  1. Ribery, 2. Toure, 3. Hazard

Drogba

  1. Toure, 2. Messi, 3. Ronaldo

Buffon

  1. Pirlo, 2. Ronaldo, 3. Messi

This just sums up what's wrong with today's voting process. Look at Ronaldo and Messi's votes. Absolutely ridiculous. Messi just voted for three of his teammates (no Ronaldo or Ribery), and Ronaldo voted for 2 teammates and a friend (no Messi or Ribery). This is just disgraceful.

I mean, as a Real Madrid fan, of course I'll be rooting for Ronaldo to win Ballon d'Or for 2013. I'd rather have him win it than Ribery. But from a neutralistic perspective (that of the journalists), their votes would've summed up to,

  1. Ribery
  2. Ronaldo
  3. Messi

Surprise? Not at all.

Didn't Ronaldo vote after Ozil had gone to Arsenal...?

what you wrote is all about TEAM , let me clear with you this award is individual performance . and the way you are calculating then Messi should not even in this compitition ( as acording your way ) coz every body see what happend to messi in semi final 7-0 and still four of these losser's are in top XI ,

my final question Acording the way you are calculation.
Messi shoud not even in best player list for 2013 -------- ??????

P.s i respect for Messi a lot he is best no doubt but failed due to his fitness problem in 2013,
what ronaldo did for his country and club was excellent

@Tiki I do agree that Balon Dor has become a joke . If Baon Dor was decided just like it was decided during Zidane time then I dont see why , Snijder or Xavi did not win in 2010 , Iniesta/ Xavi in 2011 , Drogba / Iniesta in 2012. They way we determine best player has changed we look at the stats , but we forget who sets the pace who motivates the team who makes the players play their top game . Just recently we saw Paul Pogba won FIFA World Cup Golden ball under 20 and I was happy because defensive midfielder was appreciated for his briliant work and contribution to the team ! Pogba was a force that drove France and helps Juventus in the same way . In Bayern it is Schweinsteiger not Ribery ( my opinion ) , Barcelona - Xavi and Iniesta , Real Madrid - was Ozil but now I think it is Modric ; In successful times in Manchester United it was Paul Scholes but Scholes never got recognition and etc. Same goes with goalkeepers . Not because I am Chelsea fan but Peter Cech has been hugely underrated by FIFA . This year it was Courtois . I hope one day I will see a player winning best player again because of his contribution in crucial matches and ability to change the match , but so far it looks far from it . I hope I made sense . I typed this on my phone :D

CR7 made a good statement about Mandela and the legend Eusebio. That is very great and very harming for a striker, I'm very happy with it.

@Rchangezi:

The 2 defeats of Barça against Bayern are irrelevant of Messis year. Tito Vilanova played all the games with the same players, that ended with 2 results:

  • The bench players lost determination and felt the lack of confidence Tito had in them.Thats why Alcantara was keen on leaving.
  • The titular players were all tired, and many of them got injured in March, just like Messi.

The problem of last year is that we didnt have a coach, players were trying to ape Guardiolas methods but it couldt work and the start of the season was all about Messi carrying the whole attack and scoring more goals than the defense was conceding, remember the away game against Deportivo ? 4-5 for Barça with a hattrick from Messi? Or the first leg Clasico with 2 stunning equalizers from Messi.
In March with Puyol, Mascerano and Alves injured, the injury of Messi, the rest of the titulars tired and the bench-warmers not fit and without any confidence Barça was a weak team.
They lost 1-3 to not an extra-ordinary RM side at home, 2-0 to a decent Milan team at San Siro, and got trashed by the best Europeen team of the moment wich is just logical.

I think Barça got la Liga last year only due to Messi contribution and his important goals in the first leg, and im sure Madrid with Messi,Lewandowski or Suarez instead of Ronaldo, would have won the last 2 CL with Mourinho.
Messi in term of wining mentality was better than Cr7 in 2013 in all competitions even with injury, he won la liga, made impossible become possible against Milan, with an amazing performence and leading abilities, qualified Barça against PSG with a weak form by just playing 60 min out of 180. He could do nothing at Munich, because the loss was more the loss of the whole team than his own loss.

The only thing Ronaldo did more than Messi this year is scoring more goals than an injured player, and shine in the play offs against a decent Sweden just before the end of the votes. So i dont understand how would you give BDO to Ronaldo and not include Messi in the final list ?

@Marcus :

It makes sense, the problem we have about not giving BDO to GK and defenders was not a scoop. but actually even Midlefielders are struggling now to get the prize.
Ribery nowadays is just Ribery, and will never be as popular as the trademarks Messi/Ronaldo and its sad...
We used to give prizes for only sportive performences, now in Football, a lot of capitalism factors made their apparitions in every part of the game including giving prizes...

@tiki_taka . I was never supportive of the Balon Dor merging with FIFA Player of the year award. It became very biased and unfair with controversies surrounding this new trophy every year.

^ Exactly, i loved when it was just France Football giving it with no Ceremony of rich football VIP.
France football gave it to Pavel Nedved who could never get it nowadays, i still think its journalist job to vote not players and coaches because they just prooved those last years how biased they could get.
Now Ronaldo won it and its good for him, he is not a ridiculous BDO winner, his year was phenomenal in stats and performences, but how sad it is for Ribery who will never get another chance to win it.
If you noticed it, Iniesta didnt come to the ceremony and i give him a lot of respect for that, at the oposite, Messi could refuse to come but he went there and showed how fair play he was.
I would understand if Ribery boycots this competition after that.

Agree . Players and coaches should have no right to vote or they should have no right to vote for the player that they play with either in the club or in the national team .

Really i think no body is agree with this type of voting system . it looks more who is most famous player in the world award. what i think there should be some point system like all other sports ranking or like world National team ranking point system . which include every thing and then we might seen some other player other than striker like goal keeper and defender hahahahaha it might looks funny to you guys but just an idea okay @tikitaka
