What happened to the Serie A? It used to be one of the world's best leagues!

The financial rise of the Premier League in the early 2000's brought on the decline of Serie A. Barcelona and Real Madrid's recent ascension in the late 2000's and early 2010's also made things more difficult for Serie A. The best players no longer want to go to Italy, especially with their economic crisis, and the Italian league is not as diverse as it used to be. As you can see, Inter's 2010 victory aside, Juventus are the only recent Italian team to perform in the Champions League, and it took them a while to get used to the increase in difficulty. Just goes to show that Serie A isn't cut out to be as good as La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, or EPL.

Additional: The Moggi's scandal. :) despite it was for the good, it damages Serie A, too.

@Dynastian

sorry, but what a load of crap you wrote there. loads of it. Serie A isn't good as Bundes, EPL and even Ligue 1? jesus christ... and btw, how can you know how good Serie A is, if you don't watch it?

Jinn got it right, it was Calciopoli + European crisis + managerial mistakes. that's it. the "rise" of the premier league has nothing to do with it.

oh, and i necroed this thread because i was looking for the comments on how Real Madrid would eat Juventus alive, oh the irony eh? ;)

I'm sorry if I offended you, I didn't mean it. I didn't expect to get such an aggressive response either. I was just stating that Serie A failed to progress, and instead regressed, in comparison to the other leagues. Juventus are visibly ahead of their competitors in the league, and now have a good shot at winning the CL. But otherwise, the league is not particularly impressive when weighed against La Liga, Bundesliga, or the EPL...

I was watching Serie A often till that big scandal, but then, there just wasn't any reason to watch it after that. Why when there was so much match fixing?
Nowawadays just sometimes games like AC - Inter, Napoli, Juve. But if Juve wins the UCL it will give a boost for Serie A, but it will still be 1 team league.

haha, if my reply was aggressive then i wonder how you would call the usual discussions in many FR threads, come on...
you didn't offend me, it's just that what you wrote is not correct. i just wonder how you can say that Serie A "isn't cut out to be as good as La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, or EPL". i can understand about La Liga, but the other leagues? of course Serie A regressed, when you are the best league in the world in all aspects of the game, for real, then you can only regress, am i wrong? EPL had absolutely nothing to do with the fall of Serie A, still you reported it as main factor. to judge the quality of a league you should watch it first. i know you never did and probably never will, unless some flashy footballer will play in it i guess. if you do understand about the game of football, then you would never say that Bundes and EPL have more quality. and i'm talking about the game itself, not about how nice are the stadiums. BuLi is one horse race, yet people rate it, you rate it. do not forget that Serie A this year got a CL finalist and 2 EL semifinalists. Wolfsburg vs Napoli looked like an average mid-table team, but people rate the Bundes over the Serie A. marketing magics.
and what about EPL? i won't even open this pandora box, but you can head on Tiki's wall, there's a long post of mine, give it a read if you like.
