I'm not sure how FIFA is using it right now, but the way it was used in MLS last year is that there was a fifth official who had all the screens and replays and whatnot, and that fifth person would communicate to the head official if something needed to be looked at. The head official made the decision on what call to make upon seeing the replay, but he himself did not actually initiate the use of it. It was designed to compliment the referee, not replace him.
I've seen so many times where there's been players calling for use of VAR and the ref ignores them, I've seen players scoring a goal with the linesman calling offside then the ref uses var and its a goal...
Can someone please explain to me how it works exactly? because it doesn't seem very consistent at all. Is it to be used in ALL contentious situations? Is it only to be used for goal scoring situations? How does the referee determine whether he is going to use it or not?
As much as everyone says that VAR is the solution to corruption in the game, there seems to be a high potential for abuse:
with the referee withholding use of VAR or the people choosing and displaying the images to the referee selecting images that are from a bad angle or withholding images from the referee.
Overall from what I've seen the referees need to be trained in it's handling and use and also the rules and the way it works needs to be better defined..
What do you think?
