I would say Diaby is next unluckiest with all of his injuries.

The only reason I think he is one of the most unlucky players is because of his injury that prevented him from going to the WC, he was captain of Germany and it was the time for him to shine and retire...

@messi6511

I totally agree with you . Diaby never recovers fully . Career is plagued by constant injuries . I am afraid we will never witness what could he become .

@tuanis

What about when he sacrificed himself to make a tactical tackle then scored only goal and took Germany to final , but due to his tackle he received cumulative yellow that prevented him from playing . That rule should be abolished .

Also least unlucky ones . I say :
Steven Gerrard

John Terry

Jonathan Woodgate

Paul Robinson

Ibrahimovic ( never tasted CL Glory everytime he moved to other club they won CL and he plays for Sweden even his ancestors home team Bosnia is in World Cup ) ,

Arjen Robben but his bad luck ended recently still World Cup and Alianze final will haunt him forever .

Robin Van Persie ( CL , Ruud Van Nisterloy ( No CL ) ,

Thiery Henry - just because he gave everything for Arsenal and wanted to win CL with Arsenal . Single handedly took Arsenal to the final of CL but they lost in dramatic way .

Duncan Edwards

I am trying to think more ....

This guy has the privilege to have played top class football so I dont consider him as unlucky as those whose career was ruined by a foul or an injury from which they could never come back, those players who could not play football again in their lives are the unlucky ones. Ballack became a legend and one of the most significant names in German football history. He may have not achieved as much as he deserved and yes, that "sacrifice" if we can call it that, in the WC was memorable but I dont think luck was the factor in most of his 2nd places, thats just football...

Ballack really was unlucky throughout his career. he also missed the WC final in 2002 because of a second yellow after he scored the winner in the semi finals. he's a legend nevertheless.

@tuanis

Well then is not every football player lucky to make money while playing their favorite sport that will keep them healthy not just make them rich and famous casanova ? Even for 1 or 2 seasons , are not they still lucky compare to millions of people around the world ? I dreamed of becoming footballer but there were life circumstances that prevented it . I can't blame it all on those circumstances but some who knows me may say I was very unlucky not to wear professional jersey and play every weekend sport with which I live and breath everyday as a fan . I would have given a lot just to experience it for one year or even one month life of footballer . Not that I am not happy with my life , but clearly any devoted football fan would want the life of footballer .

I don't think there is a player who has been robbed more of a chance of the CL in 2009 than Ballack.
