Here's what Wenger had to say yesterday:

"I am not against spending money, but I want to add super quality to our squad - or not," said Wenger.

"Tottenham got a lot of money for Bale, they have to invest it - I understand that. The need is different for us, we need one or two super players and we will try to add that.

"We have 24 more hours, so maybe we can surprise you. Maybe not, but I am confident."

I thought Tottenham sold Bale so that they could pay for the £100 m they spent?

"I understand Özil wanted to stay at Real. Perez to Ancelotti: - You prefer Özil or Di Maria? Ancelotti: - Di Maria."

Yeah, I think it was a very smart move from Tottenham to sign all these quality players before selling Bale and it was so clear that the "Bale Saga" was certain behind the scenes, otherwise I wouldn't see them paying around £108 millions.

Wenger is expected to make late bids in an attempt to lure Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler and Real Madrid trio Karim Benzema, Mesut Özil and Ángel di María to the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger’s shopping bill will top £120million if he can pull off that quartet, with the 19-year-old Draxler valued in excess of £40 million by his club.
