Mourinho: Torres form has been 'so-so'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has described striker Fernando Torres' contribution during his time at Stamford Bridge as "so-so - but not so bad as people sometimes try to say".

The returning Blues boss said Spain international Torres, who joined Chelsea from Liverpool for £50 million in 2011, had not delivered the sort of performances people would have expected of him.

Throughout his time as a Chelsea player, Torres has struggled to replicate the devastating form he showed at Liverpool, even when reunited with former Anfield mentor Rafa Benitez last season.

But although he has been linked with a summer move from west London, he has vowed to stay and fight for a place in Mourinho's side next season.

The coach said he believed owner Roman Abramovich - widely seen to have been the driving force behind the acquisition of Torres - would let him have the final say on the player's future.

"Torres so far is so-so," he said. "Somebody could expect more because of his potential, because of what he did before. But [it is] not so bad as people sometimes try to say. There is a balance."

He also denied that another expensive striker, Andriy Shevchenko, had been imposed on his squad by Abramovich during his previous spell in charge.

"Shevchenko? It's not true the owner forced him on me," he said. "Never, never during my time did the owner interfere in the basic things of the manager - training sessions, team selection, the profile of player I want to bring in.

"Do you want to know the truth about Shevchenko? We wanted to buy Samuel Eto'o. We wanted Eto'o, and the owner was more than ready to do everything to bring him here.

"He was the player I wanted. Why? Because Eto'o was the only player I could play with Didier Drogba, changing the system for two strikers.

"In the end, Barcelona said: 'We don't sell, forget it. Not at any price.' The owner did everything to get him, but it was not possible. After that, we went to other options and got to Shevchenko. I was happy with him."

@Ven

A striker who scores 22 goals in 64 games and eats away 200 K a week isn't one who belongs at Chelsea, Ven. It's just a personal opinion, but I'd back Mourinho completely if he's to offload Torres this summer. :/

It's even less impressive when you consider that his last EPL goal was against Aston Villa in an 8-0 demolishing in December, he averages 0.34 goals a game, and that Michu scored the same amount of goals as Torres in 21 less games (price difference between them is 48.000.000 pounds). :/

Just something to ponder on.

@Dynastian: While he should be offloaded and I dream of this day every time he ruins a game for us, I think it's safe to say he is repaying his 50 million price tag.

1) His Europa League run. 9 games six goals and probably some assists if I bother to research. There is no doubt, without Torres's great run in the Europa League, we would have not got 5 million as prize money.

2) A player's value stretches far off the pitch too.
"First of all a little background knowledge. Chelsea sell around one million shirts per year worldwide, 18.7% of their total shirt sales are 'Torres 9' shirts. Torres’ Chelsea number nine shirt is the third most popular shirt in North America behind only Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney. Globally? Torres is third again.

If Torres sells 18.7% of one million, that equals 187,000 shirts. The average price for a new Chelsea shirt with Torres on the back of it is £53.50. That means we can assume an amount of £10,004,500 for shirt sales just attributed to Torres. He was also the face of Chelsea’s tour to Asia.

Struggles or not, Torres is a marketing machine and with his performances in this year’s Europa League, coupled with the prior success of Chelsea in the Champions League last season, Chelsea project to sell around a quarter of a million Torres shirts in the next 12 months. That number would be £13,375,000. In case you were wondering.

Right here we have £23,379,500 in revenue (albeit next year's projected figures) produced by a man who cost Chelsea a fee of £50,000,000."

3) "Without Torres’ goals, Chelsea would be fifth in the Premier League with 68 points, at the mercy of Arsenal’s last game of the season. Chelsea would have been eliminated in the fourth round of the FA Cup by Brentford and would’ve been out in the third round of the Europa League by Steaua Bucharesti."

Despite his goal drought that if I quote you, started "in December", Torres was doing great before Ba joined. He felt no need for pressure as there was no competition in his position and was finally the spearhead of Chelsea. That's why he was so great in the Europa League too. He had no competition there so all the pressure was gone and he could score once again.

£40,116,471 is the amount we got this year if you include Torres's goals and his shirt sale.

£24,022,379 is the amount we would have got with Torres in the team.

4) He is improving. We all know the old Torres will never return. What we do know from the last season and the season before that is that he constantly improving. Chelsea are a financially stable club with an owner who can afford to pay a player 175,000 pounds a week and keeping Torres can help both on and off the pitch this season.

Look @V, I feel obliged to say that you are stretching logic far too thin in your defense of Torres. I'll just say that it's not his fault he cost £50m, but you will not convince me that he has been anything but a disappointment.

PS - "After that, we went to other options and got to Shevchenko. I was happy with him." - LOL. That quote just made my day.

LOL @Foota I think he said that out of politeness towards Sheva though & his relation with Roman Abramovich :))

@Footaholic: I do understand Torres is a huge disappointment is a flop. I agree with you on that part. What I can't agree with you (or anyone) is he was a complete disappointment.
