New Everton manager Roberto Martinez promised to guide the club to Champions League qualification, chairman Bill Kenwright has revealed.
Former Wigan boss Martinez, 39, has been appointed on a four-year contract at Goodison Park.

"Roberto's first words were 'I'll get you in the Champions League'."

"The fans need to know they are the most important part of this club, and I will need them. What David Moyes has done is set a real high standard."
"We need to make sure we are a winning side and a strong side, who can carry on achieving more."

"Finishing in the top six was a magnificent achievement, and we need to keep building if we want to improve on that."

He won the FA Cup this season when Wigan defeated Manchester City, but asked to leave after failing to keep them in the Premier League."

I don't know if you just copied this from a irresponsible tabloid or are just trying to stir up the FR public but this is TAKEN COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTEXT.

I listened to the press conference. He said that in football you always have to have an aim, a goal to achieve in order that you do not stagnate or regress. He said without dreams, football is meaningless and that his dream is to one day take Everton to the CL.

He was at pains to specifically point out that this will not be realistic in the immediate future as Everton are, and have been, punching well above their financial weight.
He was extremely gracious to David Moyes and said that what he's achieved is nothing short of amazing and that he left him a strong squad and solid base to work with. He even went on to say he was humbled & honored to be able to try and continue/expand upon the great work that Moyes has done.

As ever, the man is an absolute gent and he is no fool. Why would he place unnecessary pressure upon himself by announcing that he WILL get the CL. It is unrealistic. I suggest you listen to the interview before judging him.

Good thing you posted that! If not, I'm sure everyone would've thought that Martinez was an idiot. Heck, even I thought so, until I read your post.

There is nothing wrong with being ambitious even if he said that literally. If i was coaching Watford I would say the same thing. That doesn't make anyone an idiot. Dreams are free.

Here's my guess on Martinez's contribution in Everton, next season:

  • It's rather remarkable to have seen Wigan surviving the Premier League for the past 3-4 years (don't know the exact period). So right there, you have a good idea of how capable Martinez can be with little budget (and for his age too!)

His comments on bringing Everton to the top 4 is definitely intriguing, but I really think that he does have a shot, but not next season. He has a good eye for talent, young talent, and I have a strong feeling that he will concentrate more on Everton's youths, next season. He's the sort of person that can potentially bring long term success to the club, as he have already proved it at Swansea. Let's not forget that he was Swansea's manager too, and the impressive Swansea we see today would not have existed if it wasn't for Martinez's contribution on their youths.

So no, I don't think he's an idiot for promising a top 4 placing, because frankly, anything can happen in the Premier League within 1 season. I remember Spurs being placed in the middle of the table for quite some time, a few seasons ago, and look at them now. Same goes for Cit-wait, nvm about them. Another good example is, without a doubt, Arsenal.
