I think Marcelo turned out to be a beyond-amazing replacement for the irreplaceable R.Carlos in Real Madrid.
Impact they both made is to me very similar but Roberto Carlos was first which holds more merit to me.

roberto carlos, marcelo is a world class player but roberto carlos had that extra factor with his spectacular freekick / shots, that could decide the games.
I feel R Carlos was much more solid defending. Marcelo is great attacking but his defending is pretty average.
In question of actual player ability, I'd take Carlos, he was full package and could play for days.
In question of actual impact on RM, I'd maybe even take Marcelo, since he was always consistent during RM's great last years.
Marcelo is approaching his level, he established himself as top 3 in his position but Carlos career is incredible WC winner, one of the best left footed players ever and more consistent over his career...
Marcelo still has years before retirement but right now he hasn’t surpassed Carlos legacy yet.
