Nice Guy Aguero
Dynastian98 9 years ago Edited
Real Madrid 483 7140

Kun Aguero has just switched to #10 at Manchester City after Edin Dzeko's departure. In order to accommodate for fans who have purchased his old #16 jersey, Aguero has invited fans to send their #16 jersey's to him so that he can sign it and send it back to them. If not, Manchester City has offered to take in the #16 jerseys and send back the new #10 one. What a nice act from both Aguero and City.

From Manchester City's website...

"The current Etihad Player of the Season and Barclays Premier League Golden Boot winner has invited supporters to send in their 2015/16 shirts with “Kun Aguero 16” for him to sign and send back.

Or, the club will supply an alternative emblazoned with the Argentine ace’s new no.10."

In an interview recently, Jamie Redknapp brought up an interesting idea.

When asked "What is the one thing you’d ban?"

He replied "Clubs changing their kits every year. It costs fans a fortune to keep up with current trends and it’s just not fair. I get as excited as my kids about seeing who’s wearing what but for a lot of parents it’s unfair how much they have to fork out. The clubs make enough money, they should be able to give something back to the fans."

The man's got a point

True Eden. In North America sports teams rarely, if ever, change uniforms. It seems to be a football/soccer only thing.

@Eden

There is a unique nostalgia identified with each kit a club wears. Let's compare Schweinsteiger's Bayern kit for 2014/15 and 2012/13. Which would most people buy? 2012/13. That's because of the treble that Bayern had won that season. Therefore, wearing a 2013 Bayern kit is "worth" more to the average football fan than a 2015 Bayern kit, where they only won the league. I understand Jamie's point, but the economics of football has made that impossible, and most fans would like to be able to identify a club's season just by looking at a kit.

This is troubling thing every time, definitely not first time player/team gives something back fortunately. I can totally understand player's point of view to change number, there's nothing wrong in that - it's just as said kinda frustrating for the fans.

@Dyn

I understand what you are saying, but there are plenty more 2015/16 kits on the market than 2012/13 kits. Hence the 2012/13 kits tend to be more expensive.

@Eden Well, you don't need to buy new kit every year, the changes are minimal..

@Eden

But look at it from a different perspective. I bought my 2012/13 Ribery kit during that season. Now I have no need to purchase another Ribery jersey because I already have a treble winning Ribery jersey. Would you really find the need to have a Hazard jersey for each season he spends at Chelsea? I'm sure you don't need more than 1 Hazard jersey. Moreover, older jerseys are bought cheaply off websites like Ebay. :)

@Dynast: Unfortunately, I consider that rather plastic, to be honest.

You may differ, and that's fine, but I would not describe a relationship with the shirt the way you describe it. Not a relationship of love, at any rate.

Because, consider: what love, honestly, did you have for Ribery's shirt while he was wearing it? Had you watched him wearing it, or the shirts before it, for years, long before he became the sort of thing you're going to pay attention to in the CL? Have you loved the shirt of Bayern all your life, or the name Ribery?

Be honest: no, you haven't. You bought a shirt because Ribery was a hot player when you started getting into football, and you wanted to show everyone how much of a true Real Madrid fan you were. Oh, wait, no, this is Bayern, isn't it?

See, you're thinking from the point of view of a fan like yourself, who kind of just watches as a tourist, having no deep love for the shirts he buys other than whether or not they were during a really successful year. For any team that he decides to like, which will probably be whichever team is winning. That way you can say you're a fan of all these great teams, and support whichever one of them looks to be the most trendy, or successful at the time.

Because, like you say, you can just pick up a shirt on eBay.

Now me? Well, see, I've supported two teams all my life. Tottenham, and England. That's because I grew up loving those shirts, being inspired by those shirts, being moved to laughter, joy, and sad, sad tears by those shirts. I grew up with that shirt as part of my life. The shirt I saw on TV. The shirt I bought to match it. It doesn't matter when it was, because it's always been the same shirt, really. It's the club, and the colours, and the crest which are important, because those are the ones you've been loving for every year of your life.

And having to buy new ones every year, just to keep up, for minor tweaks upon a design you've known by heart since a kid and need no "Year of X" shirt to define it... is kind of taking the piss.

But we do it anyway, because hey. We love the shirt. The shirt is a part of our lives. I would never dream of putting on another.

Plastic? I've watched Ribery throughout his entire Bayern career, and I absolutely love him. He's been my favorite French player after Zidane. I was fortunate to buy the Ribery's jersey during the season they won the treble. Purchasing a jersey half-way into the season is considered plastic now just because the team ended up winning the treble? Surely you're joking. Or perhaps you assume that I'm plastic even though my only Ronaldo jersey is also from 12/13, a season Madrid lost the league by 15 points and went completely trophyless.

"a fan like yourself, who kind of just watches as a tourist, having no deep love for the shirts he buys other than whether or not they were during a really successful year"

Please don't go around assuming things of me, Lodatz. You don't know what type of person I am and I don't know what type of person you are. I request you refrain from these passive-aggressive personal attacks in the future, or I will react accordingly.

@Dynast:

"Plastic? I've watched Ribery throughout his entire Bayern career, "

LOL. I don't believe you.

"Purchasing a jersey half-way into the season is considered plastic now just because the team ended up winning the treble? "

Why were you purchasing it at ALL? You're supposed to be a Madrid fan. Did you not get this point? That's the plastic part. And if he's your "favorite French player after Zidane" (like that's something important?), then why didn't you get a France shirt? Maybe the trouble is that you didn't actually read what I wrote, or maybe I just cut too close to the bone, and you just didn't like it. Stop getting so upset about it.

"Please don't go around assuming things of me, Lodatz. You don't know what type of person I am"

Er, I know the person you've been on FootyRoom, and the exact words that you typed in this exact thread. What you said was plastic, and I explained why.

Go ahead, take a look in the Wayback Machine at your own Profile, where it used to mention all the teams you 'support' (and which I notice you have hastily changed).

" I request you refrain from these passive-aggressive personal attacks in the future, or I will react accordingly."

Um, I request that you stop whining just because I pointed out that something you said is a plastic way to think.

"I was having a nice conversation with Eden and this is what Lodatz brings to the table."

Yes. An explanation as to why what you said was plastic, and not something I am inclined to respect. If you don't like it, then frankly I don't care. Carry on being plastic. It doesn't bother me, but when you take pains to explain why buying shirts for multiple teams online is such a great way to show how much of a fan you are, then I am perfectly within my rights to disagree.

Personally, I think this improved the thread enormously. :)

@Lodatz I would never trust whether a fan of Real Madrid or Barcelona is real or plastic. But mostly plastic or a pure glory hunters.

If a RM or Barcelona fan wants to reply to my comment then you admit you are one of those.
