Inspirational stuff about Sarri.
Indeed!!! Well done to Sarri
Hear that Portsmouth? THERE'S HOPE!
Nah I'm just kidding. Good stuff by Napoli though, Sarri in particular.
Great thread. Thanks for sharing.
Nice management there by the president.
Their current manager Sarri is also a success story. 4 years ago he was fire from a Serie C. Together they are currently top of Serie A after a 2-1 victory over my Inter.
Napoli went bankrupt in 2004, they had hit their lowest being forced to play in the 3rd division, losing all their titles and being forced to change their name to Napoli Soccer until Aurelio De Laurentis rescued them. Even when they were at their lowest, 30k fans regularly showed up at San Paolo play against teams like Sora, Fermana, Teramo and Martina Franca (65k against Reggiana)
It was only the season after when they got promoted to Serie B. They were part of a special Serie B season with the likes of Juventus and Genoa both being down although for different reasons (the former due to Calciopoli). They got promoted straight to Serie A on the last day, in the match against Genoa (who also got promoted) which marked the twinnings between the ultras of both clubs.
From there, it's been always uphill except for a few stops. Two players stood out in the first few seasons when they returned to Serie A, Lavezzi and Hamsik, which they had just signed
Napoli are now the 16th highest team in Europe in terms of revenue. Napoli's fortunes started matching the ambition of their owner only when Mazzarri got hired, he led them to being contenders for Champions League places at first and Scudetto by the end of his tenure (also making their first appearance in Champions League since its rebranding). That's partly due to the signings of players Zuniga, De Sanctis and Inler but most of alll Cavani who went on to form a lethal trio with the likes of Hamsik and Lavezzi
In 2013, there was the last turning point with the sale of Cavani which went on to top the league goal scoring chart and the change of manager with an international high profile one like Rafa Benitez being hired.
Cavani was replaced with Higuain they had also strengthened other areas signing wingers Mertens and Callejon. Raul Albiol in defense and Pepe Reina in goal. While the first season was a good sign of things to come, Napoli took a step back the season after finishing only 5th and getting knocked out of Champions League soon although they only got knocked out of Europa League in the semis.
Benitez got fired and replaced by Sarri.
Sarri
As for the manager, it is Napoli's manager, Maurizio Sarri, only 4 years ago, he was coaching 3rd division side Sorrento. He actually got fired despite having the team in a comfortable 6th place. Sorrento only went downhill since that.
Sarri has never been a pro, he started coaching at 31 for 8th division sides in Tuscany and slowly worked his way up getting through all the league. He truly started from the bottom but what got him noticed is his work with Empoli who he had took from the relegation spots in the 2nd division to midtable in Serie in the matter of three years. What shocked everyone is that Empoli had innovative tactics, especially from dead balls and when it came to coaching methods and pressing
Last time Napoli were 1st in Serie A was on the 29th April 1990, they had just won the Scudetto. This is going to be a very highly contested season. Inter are only one point behind.
