Knowing FIFA, they'll kiss Messi's ass and give it to him anyways. Too early to tell who deserves it, but so far it's been Cristiano Ronaldo and Manuel Neuer leading the lines.
@Dynastian Here's what footyroom said on their facebook page:
"Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo make the final shortlist for the 2013/14 UEFA Best Player in Europe Award, with the winner named on 28 August."
so yeah, he's not even going to be a candidate, which makes sense, but also tells us FIFA are not as biased as we all think.
^That is UEFA Best Player in Europe Award, not ballon d'or
I know that, like I said he's not "going" to be a candidate.
@Gaga
UEFA distribute their awards without FIFA's opinion. Notice how the Best Player in Europe award always went to the deserving player. 2011 - Messi, 2012 - Iniesta, 2013 - Ribery...... that is how the Ballon d'Or should also be staged.
Yeah I agree , and since Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo are the candidates for UEFA awards, then FIFA should exclude Messi from the Ballon d'Or shortlist, because at the end the day the best player in Europe means the the best player in the world.
And I agree with the fact Iniesta should've won Ballon d'Or, but Ribery, in my opinion, was not as good as Ronaldo and Messi whenever he was nominated for the ballon d'or. All his accomplishments with bayern were achieved as a unit, and Ribery was never as influential for his team as Messi and Ronaldo were when they won their Ballon d'Or.
I'm a Real Madrid fan, so whatever I say in favor of Ronaldo will always be viewed as biased... but I have to say that Ronaldo deserved the Ballon d'Or ahead of Ribery, but it was so close that the award could've gone to either of them. The one thing that people forget that the Ballon d'Or traditionally went to the best player who helped his team succeed. Madrid had a great squad in 2013, but went trophyless. Bayern won 5 trophies in 2013, so Ribery deserved it too.
^I actually think fifa kissed ×Ronaldo ass last year, ×Messi was better than CR7 all these years except 2013/14.
But i agree others should have taken it like Iniesta 2010 and Ribery 2013.

lol tiki_taka you biased***. Ronaldo was far better than Messi last year, he is now too and he has been for 4 of the last 7 years. I am not biased I love both players and watching them but Ronaldo is simply a better player, especially now and last year. Messi isnt even close
***edited by mod***.
@Lily: please watch out, no insulting plz.
@Lily: btw, if @tiki is biased then a lot of others will be biased. It's opinion. I think last year Ronaldo was better than Messi (club lever). but before that Messi is SIMPLY a better player. It's matter of opinion.
They are both beast.
As for national level, since the last 2 years CR has been terrible and no where closed to Messi (except Sweden match). And let's not blame teammates for it. He didn't live up to expectation, that's all.

Last year Fifa did Ronaldo an incredible favor... Im not talking about deserving or not, but they did it. And another time was MVP award out of WHAT? ... to me every association did Ronaldo favors in the last couple of years.

@tuan +1 for fixing the title and for "They are both beast."
Messi/Ronaldo got both an undeserved Ballon d' or. Messi in 2010 and Ronaldo in 2013, Fifa has nothing to do with the voters, but the only time they changed the rules was last year, they delayed the vote 2 weeks laters including Portugal Sweden play offs, wich had its importance in the voters head, the only time fifa did an intervention...
If we judge on year performence there was no chance to Iniesta/Ribery to loose BO in 2010/2013 but what do you want ? Those who vote are stupid or vote for their friends....
Saying that Fifa is Messi biased is non-sense, dont agree with me ? I dont mind starting a healthy debate. ( Only dynast is invited to )
I dont think im biased, i love Messi but it doesnt change the fact that if someone is better i would admit it.
Edit : If you remember, everything started with Blatter giving his opinion in Oxford, Ronaldo then reacted ( rightfully ) and few days later he threated fifa to boycott BO awards ceremony, 2 extra weeks were given to the voters, and just after the play-offs the votes were made, to Ronaldo fans ask Ribery who he thinks Fifa favourised last year ?

Just imagine what would've happened to real if Ronaldo missed a game (lets say vs man utd). The outcome would have been disastrous for Real Madrid (just like when they played Dortmund away last year's champions league 2-0) Dortmund were dominant in that game that they almost tied the game (Mkhitaryan miss open goal). While the absence Ribery did cause some damage for Bayern (Bayern Munich 0-2 Arsenal) but it was not as bad as Real were without Ronaldo, just shows that Bayern's squad was better than Real's. To summarize, Ribery was not good enough to win ballon d'or, and as long as Ronaldo and Messi play at the top level, no other player will win it. However, as Messi is not at 100% it could cause a negative on Ronaldo's performances, as he won't be as motivated as he used to be when Messi was performing at the top level.
What I feel the Ballon d'Or should have looked like...
2008 - Ronaldo
2009 - Messi
2010 - Xavi
2011 - Messi
2012 - Iniesta
2013 - Ribery
2014 - So far, Ronaldo
I feel that it is criminal to not give Xavi and Iniesta a Ballon d'Or during their illustrious careers.
@Tuan
Yes, FIFA helped Ronaldo win the Ballon d'Or in 2013 by extending the voting period after his Sweden displays, but that was the only time they helped him. Ronaldo did not win anything else by FIFA except for the World Player of the Year award in 2008. The extension in voting came coincidentally after Blatter publicly insulted Ronaldo, and everyone was furious at Blatter for it. Madrid themselves requested an apology from Blatter, and Blatter decided to divert the attention from himself by letting the voting be extended so Ronaldo wins the Ballon d'Or and no one complains about Blatter's mistake.

^2012 : 92 goals ? Arguably Iniesta but i feel Messi is a deserved winner too.
2010 : Xavi or Iniesta should have been rewarded.
I agree with you for the rest, 2014 ? The year isnt finished yet but Ronaldo would be a deserved winner despite his WC flop.
I feel Messi saved some energy to play World cup, Ronaldo went ''all in'' in all games but felt short in WC.
The year was played on details between them, for the copa Ronaldo wasnt present in the final and for CL he scored 17 goals but a late miraculous equalizers changed everything.
Considering Atletico played Barça in Hell game at camp nou, they lost too much energy and their main striker wich suited Madrid.
I believe if CL final was played before the 38th liga final day, maybe Atletico would have won CL and would be less Fresh to keep a result at Camp nou, really everything were on details between those 3, Atletic were the best of the 3 imo, Barça and Real were head to head and Messi outplayed Ronaldo in both Clasicos.
But, results are results and we must give credit to achievers but really it isnt that obvious that Ronaldo had the best year.
Ronaldo would be a deserved by winner of BO, and if its someone else ( Neuer or Messi ) there will be no disgrace, the biggest positve point in Ronaldo's favour is his CL record of 17 goals that alone make him a deserved winner but not the ultimate one.
Thats only my opinion im not influencing anyone, everyone can have his own view.

@Tiki
Ronaldo's 17 goals is not the only deserving thing. He has also won the Golden Boot, for both Spain and Europe. He has helped his club to Copa and CL glory. That's two trophies compared to Messi's zero. It's three now with the UEFA Super Cup. His performances on its own were just so much better than Messi's.
Messi has not played anywhere near the level of Ronaldo this season. The only time Messi outshone Ronaldo is in the World Cup, where Ronnie was piss poor and Messi was pretty good. Clasicos do not count for Ballon d'Or because they are simply one match out of many.
In the long run, what counts is their record throughout the year. So far, Ronaldo has been much better than Messi at club level, and Messi has been better than Ronaldo at international level. However, since the club season is much longer than the international competitions, Ronaldo will always get preference.

Well we both saw their games, im sorry to tell you that in the key games, most of them he disappears.
Not deniying that Messi flopped in some important games but painting everything in white like you do is not what i call objectivity.
Sorry to tell you that he flopped in la liga key games despite being best scorer by close margin from an injured Messi, more injured than him.
And sorry to tell you that Messi was the leader when the whole team was out of ideas, sorry to tell you that he had an incredible Bale while Neymar didnt reached the expectations...
And for the CL final, as i said, RM needed a miraculous equalizer from set piece to beat a weakened Atletico, specially because they lost many energy in the final day of la liga.
Again, he would be a deserved BO winner but dont think he was by far as you said the best. Dont paint his whole season in white, some parts of it werent.
The fact it isnt Messi best year is a fact, the fact he had some out of form after injury is another fact, the fact he saved some energy for WC is debatable, but i cant believe some of you talking about bad season.
As i said trophies were won on details this year, the closest League ever by the 3 teams. Trophies were on Ronaldo side and dont deny his contribution but the 2-0 like you paint is Denying Messi contribution in 2014.
Ronaldo would be a deserved winner, but far from being the ultimate winner. For example Neuer would be a deserved winner too.

Im not trying to wind you up mate, im enjoying the debate and i think it would be fair to give Ronaldo a third BO, for the contribution, the consistence, the determination and the achievements for all this years of competition.
The only thing im pointing is that he was far from being the only ultimate performer this year, and if someone else lift the BO individual trophy, it wont be a full disgrace.
But imo he deserves it, Neuer too, I dont want a consolation BO for Messi, seing him lifting world cup would have been much joy for him and his fans.
The only thing i would say is that i still see Messi as the better player of the 2 despite Ronaldo achievements this year, its an opinion about a player not an exact science, i respect the fact that you believe Ronaldo is better, they have different styles and everyone is the best in his own style.
Let the year ends, the voters vote, and the performers perform, i wont be disgusted if he wins it this year. Ribery won sextuple last year and failed to win BO, so things are far from being decided...
Will he?
