Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi and his father are being investigated in Spain for allegedly defrauding the state of more than 4m euros (£3.4m).

The 25-year-old Argentina forward and his father, Jorge Horacio, are suspected of filing fraudulent tax returns for 2007-09, officials say.

If convicted, Messi could face up to six years in prison and a large fine, according to Spain's EFE news agency.

Why are successful people always hated by other people? :/

@Joe

He's not hated. He's just avoided tax payments. If he handles it properly, he should be fine. Maradona has been charged with the exact same thing by the Italian government. Lucky for him, the Italian government can't do anything about it unless he steps on to Italian soil.

First of all, if this IS true, then Messi shouldn't have done that. He's rich enough as it is, so it may be that they are being falsely accused. But we don't know yet. And second, Messi is too rich to get into prison. He'll be bailed out in less than a minute, and should be fine with the amount of money he has in his bank account.

^^ Exactly.

Personally, it's probably /slightly/ true, since there was apparently some interesting arrangements made by his father so that they could stay in the country. But, I doubt anything really bad.

He can afford to just pay it, whatever it is.

If Messi doesn't pay it (he has no reason not to) Im 100% sure Barcelona would pay that. 4M is scraps compared to what they would lose if Messi was unable to play.

@Rai

And at the same time, 4 M is too much for Barcelona's debt. It would be better for both Messi and Barcelona is Messi himself pays back the money. This way, he keeps his club out of this situation.

Dy, of course I'm not saying they should. I'm just saying they would of they had to.

How can he not even pay that...
He gets at least 15 million euros per year. He's kinda at fault here.

^More than 15 million euros... According to Forbes he makes 30 million euros a year! Slightly shocking to see this knowing he gets that much every year.

Maybe he didn't know about it, I mean when you get as much money as him, you probably won't notice an extra 4 million euros. But anyway I think this problem will be solved quickly because we all know that famous people don't go jail!

@Dynast 4 million is too much for Barça's debt ? For Messi Barça could pay 40M without hesitating....

@tiki_taka

Yes, undoubtedly they would do anything for Messi, but Messi shouldn't get Barcelona involved in the first place. It's his own fault that he is in this situation, and he would be a fool to get Barca involved, which I don't think he'd do. And FYI, Barcelona are currently 400+ Million Euros in debt, so paying 4 Million whilst gaining nothing is useless for the club. Like I said, Messi can bail himself out of prison and pay all his avoided taxes in an instant. He shouldn't have done this in the first place, but now that he did, he would do well to not get his club involved. But of course, this is all from a hypothetical point of view. :P
