DAVID MOYES could be set to break Manchester United's record transfer fee before taking charge of a competitive game - as the Premier League champions prepare to return to Barcelona with a third bid for Cesc Fabregas.
United's first two bids for Fabregas were met with short shrift by Barcelona, thought to be worth £25million and £30m respectively. However, Moyes is determined to land his man this summer and chief executive Ed Woodward has been tasked with putting together another offer for the former Arsenal captain.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United's bid is set to break their club record - set at £30.8m paid to Tottenham for striker Dimitar Berbatov in 2008.
That is not something Manchester United are frightened of," Moyes said recently at the prospect of spending big.
"There has been a change in the dynamic because of PSG coming on the scene recently. That has altered things. But Manchester United will always compete."
However, the Scot is preparing for failure in his pursuit of Fabregas, after missing out already this summer for Thiago Alcantara and having struggled to sign Everton's Leighton Baines.
"I never said at any time that we would get him [Fabregas]," continued Moyes.
"We’ve made offers that have been rejected and we’ll take stock from there and consider what we’re going to do next.
Moyes hopes United's third improved offer for the 26-year-old proves successful, although there is no suggestion from Barcelona that they are willing to part company with their academy graduate.
Fabregas himself has returned to training at the Spanish champions but is thought to be considering his options.
