Manchester United, Nike set for $1 billion deal

The math coming from an English report may be a little crafty, but the results are true: Manchester United are set to make just over $1 billion from Nike over the course of a 10-year relationship. The apparel agreement between the Red Devils and the American sportswear giant expires in 2015, but Nike is ready to pay 70 million pounds ($100 million) per year over a decade to stay with the club according to English reports.

Arsenal made headlines in January with the confirmation that they had linked up with Puma on a nearly $250 million deal over five years, but this Red Devils deal nearly doubles that on average.Aside from the Gunners, there shouldn't be too many hurt feelings amongst the other giants of Europe. The rising tide will lift all teams, as clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan will surely point to this deal when their contracts are up.

Our friends at Soccerly are reporting that Adidas, Warrior and Puma all tried to steal the Manchester United business away from Nike, so no surprise the number jumped.Hey United gets more money , but is Moyes right man to spend it wisely ?

Actually, its a fact that chelsea spent a lot of money. we chelsea fans can not run away from it. But as long as we stay at the top and challenging for trophies, I dont care what people say. I believe the day will come when chelsea can generate high income because I know the people who run chelsea are working hard to achieve this target.

One of the incomes that is a must for top clubs is champions league money, not only the prize money, but its TV money and so on. Yes chelsea finished 6th in 2012, but dont forget that year we won the champions league, so we could still play the Champions league in the next season. I dont know if it will affect United if they dont play champions league next season or not in term of income. But if it continues for many seasons, i think they may have trouble, i may be wrong though

@fabryi I think it's because of the popularity of Man U all over the world, so having the Nike logo on all those shirts would be good product placement. Just my opinion.

@thegame We went little off topic .

" finished 6th place not too long ago"

When we finished 6th not long ago , we changed two coaches just in one year and I remember clearly how we got some very messed up decisions not in our favor playing some teams especially United that set our team back but that is a different debate because Villa Boas was also doing some some silly experiments. ( Go to footyroom replay those games if you want ) Nonetheless, we brought home FA Cup and Champions League Cup with aging and basicly SENIOR PLAYERS ruled squad.

I Know a lot of Chelsea fans feel that Di Matteo was the master tactician who brought it to us but no it was mostly down to senior players who were allowed to play their familiar defensive football. Just FYI .

If United brings Champions League this season , than Kudos , but who are we kidding , United has coach of Di Matteo caliber and there are not enough strong authority players to influence the squad. Man your best player wanted to leave in Summer not for the first time in last 4 years and few more speculating and recently one left. So, who are we kidding when house is on fire rats ran the first . Not that they are rat , but that they were never die hard United academy players to stick around when times are bad . Only money keeps them.

"Chelsea are debt-free, because of Abramovich."

Did you see the post with Abramovich empire image ? IF yes , then you would know by now that we do acknowledge it , especially I do ! We never deny that we are happy and lucky that Abramovich decided to turn Chelsea into top Club and build long self sustainable club . Before him it was a slow process but he gave us boost we needed . We are right on the edge and already into final phases of becoming self sustainable club . Do your research about Chelsea if you want to discuss our finances . At least that is what I would before I try even think about a statement about other club.

"If Chelsea is doing the same as United in terms of their academy, how do you explain Matic?"

I have strange feeling that you probably did not understand my first post or you chose not to read it ... However, I will repeat it for the sake of argument .

Nermaja Matic was a great prospect made few appearances and he looked promising , but at that time we had enough quality in defensive midfield and Matic did not show anything exceptional to make to 11 starting , so he was decided to be sold to bring defender , David Luiz . He took a position in which we needed a player desperately . Also , because we knew that Luiz can also play defensive mid and push the line higher , he was a must buy player . Like I said players needed to be brought to bring constant success and set competitions within club .

Again Bertrand, all these players are not showing that they are better than first 11 . Cezar Azpilicueta did not have a good first season and was always behind Ivanovic , but he found himself good at being left back , so that is why Bertrand is loaned to Villa ( who btw was playing in the final of CL ) and Cashley Cole is benched . Again Cezar set the bar too high for other two left backs ( well one has aged ) and academy player like Bertrand will either settle down for being back and wait for a chance to break in or leave like a small minded average pro player does.

Simple , example , we sold United Mata player who is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world . Although player who was benched at Chelsea ! However, He is starting player in United ahead of all those bright academy players and even Kagawa .

" Evans, Cleverley, Welbeck, Fletcher and Giggs "

Really , are you serious ? Only , Giggs who is 40 and still playing better than those 4 .

YES , we learned from United , but also from Arsenal and other top clubs around the world . We paid attention and now we howl with a same pride as any top "wolf" in europe .

Chelsea is doing same thing United did for past 20 years . Look for a kid age of 15-18 then bring him to academy and make some more polishing on that player and he is ready to graduate . Also never forget to buy more established players to keep the club competitive.

"Shevchenko, Ballack, Deco, Malouda, Pizzaro, Crespo "

Lol Mate why do you play that game ? If you are hard core fan , you probably should know that United was always active in transfer market bringing in players . If you also put inflation into account they did pay some staggering fees for players .

In total since first United's title season Sir Alex has spent 614 million pounds in transfers . Even though he was brilliant at finding and developing young talent , he still was forced to invest to bring players in . Especially , it is noticeable, in the last 10 years .

YES , Chelsea has spend more but not by very much about 200 million more . However, it was all needed to build the top European football club . Now we are in final phases and balance of powers in EPL has been restored .

See you do not realize but Chelsea has become world wide brand like United . We are doing good and our academy is doing great . Sponsors want to work with Chelsea and deals are happening every season . So No worries . We are LUCKY to have Abramovich to help us make history and now we are lucky to have Mourinho back to nail Chelsea strong in EPL history .

Mourinho will make Chelsea rule this league like Sir Alex made United .

Sorry for long essay , just did not want to leave out anything .

@TheGame: Actually, the first comment is directed at the team, because it's not only the managers fault that the team plays bad, while the second one is a legitimate question. And have you ever seen me insulting Moyes, let alone United on this forum? No, you haven't because I focus on my team. This is what you should do, too. You're complaining about Chelsea supporters who supposedly insulted your team, but in the meantime you're doing the exact same thing, so you're no better than any of them. And btw, I'm at home =)
