I feel a bit sorry for Clattenburg, the first time he failed to play advantage when Smalling got a yellow was a clear mistake, and I honestly think it would've been a 50/50 had Palace gone onto score from there.
The other major point of contention would be when Rojo saw yellow, and Clattenburg again failed to play advantage. Again, it was the wrong choice, but I doubt Palace could've done anything from the play, so it's less as big of a deal as the first incident. I didn't like how he then gave Rojo a yellow no reason other than trying to balance out the decision though.
In terms of the game itself, it was a bit of a shitshow. Palace's goal was De Gea's fault, he never got back into position after campaigning for the offside, if he's where he should be, that never goes in. United goals were scrappy, but well deserved. The Smalling red I have no complaints with as well, he shouldn't have been so aggressive to begin with, but once he lost the challenge, pulling down the player was the right call. Both of his yellows prevented goals, so I can't really blame him.
All in all, a good victory, nice to have silverware again. It is nice for Van Gaal to go out on some sort of high, while firing him is the right call, he hasn't been a total tragedy for the club like Moyes was.
Finally some silverware post-Ferguson.
Palace scored first through Jason Puncheon but United replied when Mata shot with his left foot.
In extra time, Smalling was sent off for a second yellow, but that didn't stop Lingard from hitting a beautiful shot to win it.
Palace gave it their all, but in the end Van Gaal's men got the job done.
What did you guys think of the game, the referee, and will this be enough to save Van Gaal's job??
