Louis Van Gaal's legacy to Manchester United
decentK 9 years ago Edited
Arsenal 38 2896

"I hope people will look back in the future and talk of the young players as my legacy"

After seeing this quote from Van Gaal, it really blew my mind, in a positive way. I just realized that Van Gaal's legacy will be unbelievably massive, even though he's not going to win anything for Man Utd.

HE HAS DONE WHAT FERGIE SHOULD HAVE DONE.

We all know (well you could argue against it if you like) that Ferguson left a massive hole to Man Utd when he left. I know they were champions, but let's be real. He left Fletcher, Carrick, Van Persie (we all know he had 1 or 2 years left), Vidic, Ferdinand etc. He didn't fill the gap of Scholes either.

I believe what Van Gaal has done, is one of the most unselfish moves you can make. He has given A PLATFORM on a silver platter for the next manager to succeed.

Martial, Shaw, Borthwick-Jackson, Depay (let's be real, it's his 1st season). Lingard, Pereira, McNair to name a few more. He has given 19 under 23 players a chance after his arrival.

"It is very important, but I have taken a risk in minimising my squad to accommodate young players"
"It is always good that you educate your own players, in the culture of Manchester United and also the playing style of Manchester United,"

I do agree that his playing style hasn't been up to standard. But I do believe that in a long run he's done absolutely magnificent job.

I just hope personally that José Mourinho won't join Man Utd for Van Gaal's sake. He'd probably put Borthwick on loan & bring Essien to the left back position.

That is why I am not upset about these results. Every United fan that gets pissed about these results has no patience. We all need to understand that we will have couple bad seasons with awful results but in a few years time we will be flying. With all respect to Ferguson, he left United with a dead team. Nearly our whole back line was really old (Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic) and needed replacement. Giggs and Scholes who were our stars were about to retire and in general we need a lot of replacement. LVG has created a whole new young squad that just need time to build chemistry, so once again just be patient.

Oh please. Van Gaal hasn't kept his squad small. The reason you're seeing so much youth is a combination of injuries and poor form from some players who United paid stupid amounts to get here in the first place.

Borthwick Jackson is playing because Shaw is out. (Although Shaw was a good buy).

Love was playing because Darmian got injured.

Lingard is playing because Januzaj loan/Young injury/Valencia injury

Januzaj was loaned out, and now that he's back, he's not playing

Depay has been below the standard we expected

Martial has been a godsend, but of course he should be, considering what we paid for him.

McNair has barely played, even with our defensive issues, namely set pieces, where he has been effective.

Pereira has rarely seen first team action.

It's a good batch of young players, but for Van Gaal to say he's taken all these sacrifices to accommodate them is simply wrong.

People complain about the team Fergie left, but it honestly wasn't that bad.

In terms of youth, we had Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, David De Gea, Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverly, Rafael, Johnny Evans, Angelo Hernandez, Federico Macheda, Wilfred Zaha, Michael Keane, Tyler Blackett, Adnan Januzaj, and James Wilson.

De Gea is world class now, Smalling is one of the better defenders in England, and Cleverly/Evans/Zaha all start for above average prem teams. The only ones in that group you can say might be failures are Keane/Macheda/Hernandez.

There was nothing whatsoever wrong with those players, and while I do think that our current young players are better, it's because we forked out about 90 million for Shaw/Depay/Martial.

@SunFlash Kagawa and Welbeck both didn't really work out. The only really young successful players SAF left were, Smalling, De Gea, Januzaj and maybe Jones.

That's a great return on youth players. I would be thrilled if any of Depay/Januzaj/McNair/Borthwick-Jackson/Wilson became as good as those players you just mentioned. That's almost half a starting eleven. Considering United have bought 4-5 starters every summer, that's an incredibly good return on the academy.

People shaft much of Fergie's 2012/13 team, but that team won the PL with a great attack (which LVG inherited) and a weak defence (which he fixed). There wasn't that much wrong with it, just like there isn't much wrong with the squad we have now, just the man in control of it (in my opinion, at least).

Giving fantastic platform for the upcoming manager. I do think Man Utd's problem is Van Gaal's tactics, but that doesn't take away the job he has done.

@SunFlash The problem with the way Van Gaal built his team was timing. In his first season we had an amazing attack but an awful defence. To solve this, he focused on building a strong defence which he has now done. The problem was that as he built our defence, our attacking players were losing form and becoming too old. RVP became too old. Hernandez lost form (has it back now). Falcao never found form. Rooney kind of lost form. Because our attack was so strong and because LVG was focused on fixing our defence, he didn't see any of this coming causing him to sell RVP, Falcao, and Hernandez which is why we have struggled in the attacking sense.

Nowadays, I think our problem is that our team is too young meaning we make way too many individual mistakes and our players are in general very inconsistent causing us to never find form. For example, I found our defence pretty solid in the game today and our attacking players were pretty good. What caused us to lose was silly set piece defending. I play as a defender on my team and being a good defender during set pieces is all about experience. Whenever our team has a new player join, the have no clue whatsoever what they are doing on set pieces because once again you need experience during a set play. You can probably see where I am going with this. Our defence is very young meaning they make a lot of dumb mistakes and have very little experience on set pieces. On the attacking sense it all about form and since most of our attack is young, we struggle finding a good run of form. Martial has been very good all season so he doesn't really count in this. Lingard, Memphis, and Januzaj have all been ups and downs this season which has made it nearly impossible to predict when they will perform well and when they will play like crap. For example, Lingard has been very impressive in the last couple games before this one while Memphis has been garbage. Today, Lingard did practically nothing for 63 minutes while Memphis managed three shots (one was blocked) in the short time that he played. All of this means one thing. You can not blame LVG for the recently bad results. He can not control dumb individual mistakes defensively and can never tell when Lingard or Memphis will play well meaning he is left hoping for the best when he puts in the starting eleven. I am pretty sure I made all of the points somewhere else to defend LVG but there is a difference this time. In the past LVG was always blamed for not allowing players freedom in the attack. In the past three games, the players have been given the opportunity to do what the want in the attack which has allowed Mata and Martial especially to play fairly well. This shows that LVG is not as stubborn as you think because he is willing to adjust and knows more to what he is doing than you think. So I ask you SunFlash and any other United fans that are reading this to keep faith in our manager and to stop this bullsh*t Mourinho stuff. One last thing. As I just said, about Mourinho, which a lot of people agree on (I think), how on earth do you think he will do well at United. I could go on and on about how he shouldn't be our manager but I think that is for another time. Let's say LVG get sacked, who in the world is out there that could be a good replacement. All of the top top managers are locked into a club already so LVG must stay for the time being and we need to start backing him up, and staying beside our club through this tough time so that we can avoid putting him under too much pressure. LVG IN!

@SunFlash, Angelo "Henriquez "- who we should have never sold. I would also add that Van Gaal's sale of Chicharito and the way he handled Di Maria were not something I would expect of a world class manager.

@TheGame

That's my mistake, I was listing from memory, which apparently isn't perfect :P

@louis

I think kicking out a manager mid-season is classless and rarely solves anything. Unless you're Chelsea apparently. But I do think LVG needs to go at the end of the season. 3 wins in 13 league games, plus getting kicked out of the Champions League...c'mon. He deserves to go at this point.

@SunFlash I've made point in defence of him, so once again I do not think he deserves to go UNLESS there is a clear better solution out there (a top class manager).

It has already been noted by many that LVG is really good with young player, so it make sense for him to have focused his attention in this area. While I understand that some people are more than displeased with his tactic, but I think we can agree he added some player with really good potential to the team.

Yet another rabbit out of his hat. Marcus Rashford with 2 goals. I don't give 2 shits if Martial was injured or not. When for example Chelsea have had injuries, they've pulled... no, not Bamford or Solanke, but Alexandre Pato.

Well, I wouldn't get too exited about all the players who will make their debut under LVG. We saw plenty of those cases with Ferguson and only a portion of those actually became United regulars.

Rashford could become another Macheda, I just hope it is not the case.

United will be making a huge mistake if they let van Gaal go for Mourinho. Also tthe way he fell on the floor today can only endear more to the fans. The guy is really hilarious and by the look of it his players are very "horny". He's the very same guy that built one of the best teams in history. Ajax 95, Barca, modern Bayern, played beautiful in WC. Give him time. He knows what he's doing.

Completely agree with Wolfie. With Mourinho it would just be recycling Van Gaal's players and bringing his own. We can't just keep going through transitions.

LVG's story in United is like:

Lost game = LVG OUT
Won game= GIVE HIM TIME HE IS THE BOSS.

In fewer words none of us knows what is managing at the level he is doing it. Appreciate his work and try to enjoy it, bad results are always there but so are great results. He brought great talent to UTD but he is trophyless, well at least the future of UTD will be bright.
