La Liga TV rights changing in 2016

About f*cking time.

Starting from 2016, La Liga teams will no longer be able to negotiate their own television rights. This will finally end the greedy pair of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona from hogging the majority of the money.

Last season's champions, Atletico Madrid, earned 42.000.000 Euros from TV rights. Cardiff City, who finished at the bottom of EPL, earned 74.500.000 from TV rights.

As of 2016, the rights will be auctioned and sold to the highest bidder. However, there is a new compromise in the legislation which states that no club may get less money than they are currently receiving. This ensures that clubs are fated to generate more money, while simultaneously maintaining the 140+ Million Euro revenue for FC Barcelona and Real Madrid from TV rights.

The presumed final bidding price is reported to be around the 1.5 Billion Euro mark. The highest earning league from TV rights is the EPL with 2.3 Billion Euros (also going to be established as of 2016).

Of the final sum of money,

  • 92% will go to the clubs in the Primera and Segunda Division
  • 3.5% will go as "parachute payments" to relegated clubs
  • 2% to the federation
  • 1% to the league
  • 1% for Olympic sportsmen
  • 0.5% for women's football, Segunda Division B, and the footballers' union

Good news for Spanish Football.
It would be better like this imo.

  • 91.5% will go to the clubs in the Primera and Segunda Division
  • 3.5% will go as "parachute payments" to relegated clubs
  • 1.5% to the federation
  • 1.5% for Olympic sportsmen
  • 1% to the league
  • 1% for women's football, Segunda Division B, and the footballers' union

Doesn't seem much difference but 0.5 can influence really well.

0.5% is a huge amount when talking in terms of billions.

Thats the only way to not see World class Spanish players cross the sea in 2016, so its good news, specially when we know it wont affect Barça or Madrid who have various revenues and big marketing impact so its good for the league...

@Tiki

Absolutely agree. Real, Barca, and Valencia will be the three teams who will be monstrously rich, but the other 17 will be very well paid too. Surely this will decrease the number of Spaniards who go abroad, and invite more foreign players to our league to increase its quality even more (scary).

GREAT for the league, but I've said this before, 2 giants kinda deserve much more money 'cause they've got 10000x more viewers in their games than for example Elche or Granada.

Yea, but I think it will take some time for the teams to get new players. But La Liga may be more competitive than ever after this.

that is really good news and this will make a huge impact for teams like corodoba elche levante and it will be a more competitive league all round.

@decent its true that they deserve more if we were talking about fairness but it wont do justice. Its not that they don't deserve it, its just they don't really need it as much as the other teams. This isn't fair, but it is definitely justice.
