The only true defender is Abidal, who can also play Left Midfield. I think Guardiola is trying to build up a team where all the players can play in numerous positions. I think he's trying to build a team where the entire team is a midfield, and all the defenders and attackers can also help with the build up play. Barcelona have few specialist players: Puyol and Villa. Villa can operate only as forward I'd think.

When you have an entire team that all can play as midfielders, possession will be even easier for Barcelona, the flow of the passing will be silky smooth, and setting up of chances might even be greater.

For example Pique's a fantastic CB for Barca, because he distribute the ball well, has a physical presence, assist, and score a few nifty goals. Assisted Messi w/ a fantastic backheel in the Supercopa match, and scored a great goal against Inter in 2010.
