SO glad someone posted this. Was about to do the same.
For those who are unaware:
This was a showdown match between Doncaster Rovers & Brentford to decide who would clinch the second automatic promotion spot to the Championship. Doncaster only needed a draw or win to take the spot and it looked like that was exactly what was going to happen until in the 94th minute, one of their players conceded a penalty for a handball in a goalmouth scramble.
At this point the entire home stadium erupted in glee as they awaited a last minute penalty to confirm they would be in the Championship next year and force Doncaster into the playoffs. But wait, what's this? The Brentford players were arguing amongst themselves as to who would take the penalty. Much to the amazement of everyone, on-loan Fulham striker Marcello Trottsa insisted on taking keeping the ball and taking the spot kick away from captian and designated penalty taker Kevin O'Connor. He went for power instead of precision and smashed the ball into the crossbar.
While everyone was still getting to grips with what just happened, the revound was punted downfield to Paynter who found the Brentford goalkeeper out of position and still holding his head in his hands in disbelief they missed the penalty. Seaizing the opportunity Paynter ran at the stunned GK and slipped the ball into his teammate and he kicked it into an empty net.
Net Result: Doncaster Rovers went from the brink of play-offs to being automatically promoted to actually winning the championship title with that goal (as later the team above them lost). In contrast Brentford went from the brink of clinching automatic promotion to the agony of having to go through the play-offs against one of the hardest teams in League One. All of this happened within 18 seconds of play. AMAZING end (on par with last years Prem league finish or even Arsenal's last gasp goal to win the title at Anfied years prior).
