What a ridiculously insanrley ambitious effort. He wanted to walk from Seattle (tip of Northwest America) all the way to Rio? That's about the length of 2 continents. I wonder if anyone has ever walked that far... ever.
Now, we'll never know if he would've.
Test in Peace
A SPORTS fan who set out to dribble a football 10,000 miles from America to Brazil in time for the World Cup has died after being hit by a lorry.
Richard Swanson, 42, was walking south along US Highway 101 when he was struck – less than 300 miles into his epic journey.
He had left his hometown of Seattle just two weeks ago on May 1 ahead of his year-long trek that would have taken him through 11 countries to Sao Paolo, Brazil.
On his website breakawaybrazil.com, Richard had written: "It will be a trip of a lifetime where I will push myself further than I ever thought possible.”
The intrepid dad-of-two had started out in flip-flops but later switched to hiking sandals, sleeping on the sofas of strangers who he met along the way and befriended.
In a newspaper interview before his death, Richard said: "I felt destined that I should go on this trip.”
The former private investigator was using the trek to promote the One World Futbol Project, which donates footballs to people in developing countries.
The charity's boss, Lisa Tarver, said: "We are deeply saddened to learn about Richard's death.
