Fonseca New Manager of FC Porto

The man who led a second division club in Portugal to 3rd place and Champion League in front of the likes of Sporting Lisbon, Braga, Academica, Vitória and more, is being presented as new FC Porto coach on Sunday.

Personally I haven't been more excited since Mourinho got hired. Fonseca made a club that usually finishes at the bottom of the league, end third. If he can carry out a Champions League spot for a bottom club, I think he'll do big things for Porto. Tactical genius, and very entertaining football.

Vítor Pereira, the facist as Footaholic calls him (brilliant nickname), is now gone to Al-Ahli, a top club in Saudi Arabia, lmao, joining former Sporting, Newcastle, Valencia and Braga player Hugo Viana, former Benfica player Bruno César and the man himself, Ricardo Quaresma, who played for Sporting, Barcelona, Porto, Inter and Chelsea. Looks like Pereira isn't following the likes of AVB and Mourinho.

Which club did Fonseca manage last season? Sorry, as you can see, I don't follow the Liga Portuguesa much. >.<

@DYN: He was the guy who brought that tiny club (~2-2.5k attendance) Pacos de Ferraira to the CL this season. They will be the smallest club to ever reach the elite competition. Think of a small Segunda team playing CL.

Anyway, I have to say this:

#1- WHAT THE FLYING F*CK PEREIRA? Is this guy retarded? He's a young manager who's stock is as high as it's ever been and he goes to... Saudia. WTF! Even if they pay more he's going to ruin his long term career prospects.
Wait, maybe the Fascista got fed up with all the liberalism in Portugal and thought he'd be more at home in an despotic country?

#2- I know Golden is excited an I'm sure Fonseca will be chomping at the bit to make such a step up but I feel bad for Pacos. It's hard enough for them to compete but now they've lost the manager that got them there.

I agree to some extent with your first point, Foota, but there are some other sides to it as well. I mean, don't blame him for cashing in, he's 44, and got plenty of time left. I believe his reputation will be intact in 2 years or so, it could however be forgotten a bit. Let's see.

Besides, I never rated him that high as a manager, although he didn't lose a single game this season in the league. However, in the CL both last season and this season, he showed his weak side. Couldn't perform under huge pressure like Mourinho or AVB. And that's where Porto really need to take the step right now.

Additionally, you're very right about Pacos. They've lost their best player to us, Josué, who was their chief creative force behind their incredible season, and now the coach. As a consequence, I don't see them getting past the one qualifying round they need (round 4) of the CL, or doing well in the EL, sorry. Not now.
