FIFA and UEFA Rankings

So the FIFA ranking for nations and UEFA ranking for leagues have been updated and ready for the 14/15 season. In the FIFA ranking there is no real suprises really after the WC. but in the UEFA ranking there are:

So what surprised me (or not) the most about the UEFA ranking were Portugal and Russia. Portugal is now on 4th place and has gone past the italian league, and the Russian league is getting better, very close to France.

One question for you guys is what will happen with Italy now? will Portugal have 4 places in Champions league like England, spain and germany and Italy 3 after Portugal passed them on the ranking? anyways I had to say i expected some to be higher like Netherlands and Turkey.

UEFA or FIFA rankings do not mean anything.
And about why Turkey is so low; UEFA banned some Turkish teams every year and didn't replace them with another Turkish teams (except this year) but put them into consideration on country points. That's why.

Emrecan, they do. UEFA rankings decide how many places each country gets in the CL and EL, which pot they're in when there's a draw, etc. The FIFA ranking also decides similar things.

so it does matter, but some tend to look at it with not so much seriousness.

Yes I know, I had an article about that :D but I didn't mean that. I meant those rankings don't show the real (deserved) places of the teams, countries.

Trukish league should be around 7th or 8th place..
And how is portugal so high on the list? what have they done to get there... France and Italy should be fighting for that 4th spot, not portugal

^That's because Benfica was so successful in the Europa League last years. Every year they played at least Semi Finals, and in 2010-2011 season. Portugal had 3 teams in Semi Final of Europa League and two of them made the Final. I guess those were Braga and Porto.(as you see they had more than Spain or England that year) So from all these, I am led to the conclusion that UEFA give too much points for Europa League. What do you think?

@Tuanis, did you see Porto and Benfica they are doing very well. And i think Sporting can also do well next year in the CL.

I have nothing against the Portuguese league but it is only Benfica who has been doing well, and they have been doing well playing in the EL. Therefore they should get more EL spots but no more CL spots... Some leagues should get more CL spots and less EL spots and viceversa. The ranking has some mayor flaws.

Why is Belgium and Switzerland so high in the list? And Ukraine? Ukraine cant even play football nowadays since all these problems.

^ Uefa considering last 5 years on country points. Switzerland because of Basel but I have no idea about Belgium.
I think that's wrong too. 5 years is too much. 3 years is ok in my opinion.

@Iraqi_Madridsra yes they can. Now, Ukraine has 14 teams in the UPL and they're already on the 3rd round. Oh yeah, and the teams from Crimea can't play.

Turkey got cheated because Fenerbahce(the latest league winners) can't compete in Europe :S.
Also, Turkey/netherlands did not go far in recent Europa leagues so my guess is that's how Portugal is so high up and they are not.

^except 2012/2013 :D Fenerbahçe played Europa Semi Finals and Galatasaray played Quarters in CL. Beşiktaş was banned because of FFP that year. But still not a big year. You are right.

Dynastian I agree, but you have to remember that ukranian top teams have done well in recent 5 years too with SHakthar, Dynamo Kyiv and Dnipro. but I still think there is no doubt that turkish top teams like Galatasaray, fenerbahce and besiktas are better.

Tuanis yes but like others point out Portuguese league teams have done well in CL too, Benfica and Porto have reached quarters several times, but yes they get a lot of points for their great work in the EL.

Tuanis I dont think its weird that Portuguese league is above italian and french therefore. I think in the last 5 years Benfica has reached 2 champions league quarters and 3 europa league finals. very impressive
