European coaches ponder abolition of extra-time :

UEFAGoing straight to penalties

enter image description here
Europe's top coaches pondered the idea of abolishing extra-time after drawn matches in European competition and going straight to penalties at their annual meeting on Wednesday.Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, UEFA's coaching ambassador, said he did not like to see players "walking" around the pitch exhausted and that extra-time rarely succeeded in producing a winner."Some coaches said it could be direct to penalties, others thought that could be an advantage for the smaller teams who could defend more," said UEFA's chief technical officer Ioan Lupescu."One thing that is very clear is that these days the players play so many matches and we raised the question whether from their point of view it is still worthwhile having extra-time."Ferguson said it was important to consider the "protection" of the game."I don't think we like to see players exhausted in extra-time and when the whistle goes at the end of 90 minutes, I've always the feeling it's going to go to penalty kicks," he said."You saw in the last Champions League final, players walking about... it's inevitable that it goes to penalty kicks so the question is how we can improve it?"South America's equivalent of the Champions League, the Libertadores Cup, does not use extra-time in drawn matches.Coaches were also given a tactical summary of Euro 2016.Only 31 percent of games at the tournament were won by teams who had more possession of the ball, while 11 out of 15 knockout matches were won by the team with less possession. There was a drop in goals from counter-attacks, 30 percent came from set pieces and 18 percent were scored by substitutes, UEFA said. Forty-two percent of goals in open play came from crosses and pullbacks.

From Marca/en.

Im actually against this idea, specially in Finals where defensive teams with many yellows or reds would get happy not to play extra 30 minutes. For me its worst than applying golden goal and considering CL, the longer a game can get the best for me from a neutral position. But i understand coaches who want their teams to get fit for weeknd domestic games...

Good idea or not ?

Wow, thats actually very though, it kind of a sensible point, in my opinion. I can't really say, I agree for some neutral fan, it make the game more exciting but I believe it could be annoying for people who have though agenda and can't stay for more than a 100 minute or so. Its not much of a point though. Still, I don't think it really advantage any team that much, maybe only the team who have better penality taker, since they will be less fatigued and might be a tiny bit more focused than if they had played another 30 minute. I kinda like the idea but at the same time, I'm not sure this is for the best. Also, you said top coach in europe in your post but I can see Benitez next to Emery, there must be a mistake. :p

Look, I'm all for pks to decide a game that couldn't be decided any other way. That being said, pks are a total crapshoot. The extra 30 minutes allows the "better" team to ramp up pressure and win the game. Many weaker teams play extra time just to get to pks, and if we remove extra time, why would they not do that in the first 90 minutes?

@Sunflash That remind me something my mom told me before. When I told her a game was going to the penality shoot-out, she said something like: "if that what was gonna happen, they should have simply went with the pen at the start". XD

this is a super hard decision. Personally, i'd rather see 30 minutes more of shit football/defensive football/tired players, literally 30 minutes of anything over penalties any day. Penalties are garbage. As a football fan, the extra time is great to watch. It shows passion, the physical fitness of the players and how badly they want it. Literally, they could play for another hour, i'd rather watch that, than reduce the time just to get to penalties.

so, no, i'm not in favor of removing extra time.

Really hard to decide. As a neutral I would say it's fun to watch extra time, but players need to be fit for weekend matches. Also I love penalty shootouts when my team is not involved, as it is really fun to watch. But all in all I would say extra time is fine as it is right now.

nah.. i want the extra 30 min.. let players do what they are paid for till the very end.. people inside the stadium spend their hard earned quid to watch them play live and players are even paid good to insane level amount of salary.. give the crowd a SHOW the wanted to see and witness inside the stadium.. work hard, play hard.. :)

It's very idiotic decision for the fans and the national team's coaches imo, but it could be sensible for the club coaches.
I'd rather watch 30 mins extra time than the penalties.
Penalties is a way to let weaker teams to get through to the next stage while the extra time can make the stronger team to go through. Even if it is with a percentage of %30, definitely more sensible to play the extra time.

I would actually prefer the golden goal than the game going to penalties after 90 mins.

Why now?

They just have too much money, so they need something to talk about. Jesus, there have been tournament which go straight to PKs shootout and those were pretty crappy.

Either apply Golden Ball (stop right away when a team score in Ext) or Silver Ball (stop after the half that has a team advantage in score). I like Golden Ball, team is gonna celebrate a goal like mad...

Or modify the Silver ball:

  • at Ext, if both score and on par, the one score first won.
  • from 2nd half of Ext, who score first win
  • Or: ext is 10 mins each

If I was a coach, I would more ask for extra sub in ET, considering tiredness and injuries, an extra substitution should be given to both teams to let coaches the ability to make an impact on their team. We had a thread where statistically we proved that playing ET at home with the help of the fans and the away goal rule was making a perfect equilibrium to teams chance to go through. I would agree with them if the away goal rule was not applied because then the host team has a big advantage.
In the one game finals where no team play at home, I would go far and apply a winner goal even after ET to abolish a tournment win by PK, where under pressure most of the superstars miss it. Just like the 5th set tie break abolition in Tennis, a golden goal rule applied only after ET until a team scores to win the tournment, what do you think about it ?

Actually guys the golden goal is logical in a neutral pitch, but in a 2 leg confrontation where ET is played in the stadium of the team who hosts last, applying golden goal is abolishing the away goal rule, that gives hosts a Huge advantage considering the fact that fans will push them while the rival would be tired. I should look for that thread where we explained it well but actually ET gives exactly 51-49 chances to go through wich is far more equilibrated to PK where the team to shoot first has 59%_41% chance to win, these stats are based from thousand of CL games played in final stages.

Edit : Tuan that was your thread where we got stats explanation :

Additional sub for extra time would be an addition I'm on board with.

Lol yeah, we found many solutions for me anyone is good except Pks shoot outs, directly after 90 min. They used to do a coin flip in the past before the PK rule. Progressism may lead to regression at times, imo camera's or the number of homegrown players in a team that represents a City or a country in CL are more interesting issues imo.
My opinion in the subject is already made but I just wanted to share what coaches are debating atm, nobody seem to disagree or have a different opinion, we will find a subject where many have different perspective lol.

IMO the best would be if they keep it like this and add the extra sub like you already stated. It has worked great in Copa America, there's no reason why it wouldn't work in UEFA competitions as well.
