Wayne Rooney once said that to him Andres Iniesta is the best player in the world for the way he dictates the play from midfield, and that without him, Messi wouldn't be where he is today (which I think is rather true). But at the same time, skills and records tend to catch people's eyes more than how important a player is to his team. Look at Xabi Alonso. He is the man who makes Madrid tick, but he is far from their best player. That's why Iniesta will never win the Ballon d'Or, simply because he is living in a generation with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
