Chelsea have inquired about Edinson Cavani, says Napoli president
Napoli's president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has said Chelsea inquired about signing the striker Edinson Cavani.
"Chelsea are interested in Cavani and they will call me soon," De Laurentiis told Napoli's official radio station, Radio Marte, from Los Angeles on Friday. "I'm very happy that his brother has said that he will stay, but if he did decide to go to Chelsea we would take time out to think and replace him with people worthy of replacing him."
Cavani was top scorer in Serie A last season, with 29 goals in 34 appearances, as they challenged for the title and finished second behind Juventus. The Uruguayan is also Napoli's third highest goalscorer ever with 104 goals in three seasons, 11 behind Diego Maradona, who scored 115 in seven seasons.
De Laurentiis, a film mogul who recently appointed Rafael Benítez as manager, also revealed in the interview that he has offered €40m (£34m) for the Roma pair Erik Lamela and Marquinhos.
"I contacted Unicredit [the Italian bank which part-owns Roma] directly for Lamela and Marquinhos. I offered them €4om," he said. "They wanted to sell me the services of [Pablo] Osvaldo at all costs, but, seeing that for now we have Edinson Cavani, we don't need him.
"This all happened before Benítez signed and I thought I'd done good business for two young players. Then, however, I began to wonder if they were really worth that amount of money."
Napoli are looking to strengthen their squad for next season, to build on an impressive campaign that saw them qualify for the Champions League.
Benítez replaced Walter Mazzarri as manager after the latter moved to Internazionale and will need a bigger squad if they want to compete domestically and in Europe.
That was The Guardian. In fact many sources are talking about it right now. I don't think it's impossible with such offer. It would be even better if we included Torres in Cavani's deal knowing that Benitez is managing Napoli.
Chelsea line up move for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani
Chelsea have made their first major move in the transfer market since reappointing Jose Mourinho by opening talks with Napoli over a potential British record fee for Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani.
It is understood that a £40 million deal was initially suggested byChelsea but Napoli, who are now managed by former Stamford Bridge manager Rafael Benítez, have said that they would expect Cavani’s £53 million buyout clause to be met.
It is unclear whether Chelsea are prepared to go beyond the £50 million fee they paid for Fernando Torres and there remains competing interest in Cavani from Manchester City and Real Madrid.
Any deal for Cavani would also place the future of Torres under fresh doubt although he has repeatedly said that he wants to stay and fight for his place under Mourinho regardless of what happens this summer. Torres has scored only 34 goals in 131 Premier League appearances since joining from Liverpool at the beginning of 2010.
Cavani has scored 104 goals for Napoli during these past three years and was also the top goalscorer across Serie A last season.
Manchester City have also held talks with Aurelio de Laurentiis, Napoli’s owner, and could offer Edin Dzeko as a potential makeweight in any deal.

Transfer news: Napoli claim Chelsea are planning talks about Edinson Cavani
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis claims he expects to hold talks with Chelsea about a possible deal for Edinson Cavani.
Cavani's future has been the subject of intense speculation for some time with the Uruguay international one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain have all been credited with an interest in the 26-year-old.
De Laurentiis hopes to keep Cavani at Napoli, but insists if he does leave the money they get for him will be reinvested into the team.
"The budget for the transfer market will be based in relation to the Financial Fair Play rules," De Laurentiis told Radio Marte.
"If Cavani is sold then I'll reinvest all of the €63million (£53.5m) of his release clause.
"There is interest from Chelsea in Cavani, they'll call me in the next few hours.
"I'll be delighted if he stays, but if he leaves then he will be adequately replaced."

FFS... If they buy Cvani, then Chelsea will already have won the title. The only things that might tempt him to stay is that he could break Napoli's all-time goalscoring record, is settled there, will be getting a substantial pay rise, and has a new manager to work with.
Still, Chelsea can offer wages outside the realm of normality and in the end, money talks loudest.
For once, I would like it if we could buy someone of this caliber. But we can't.
Arsenal will have around 70 millions to spend but the problem with Arsenal is that they need to sign more than one player for next season.
