I don't think the current United squad needs a lot of work. A target striker like Lukaku would certainly help, but the main issue has been the style of play when it comes to scoring goals. As we've shown vs Wolfsburg and Newcastle, when United doesn't play possession, chances fall from the sky. Although the crossing needs to be better, which is why Young has moved to RM. I know he's a LM, but if he can play RB, he can play RM. I'm assuming Depay will continue to develop well. If he continues to be mediocre for the remainder of the season, it might be possible to get a winger from Real Madrid when their bans ends, if not Bale, then maybe Jese Rodriguez.
I love Blind, but he doesn't belong at CB, which is why I've brought in Hummels. Above all, Hummels is positionally sound, large, and smart. He'd shore up the backline in no time. I know many United fans will disagree with me here, but Darmian will be fine at RB. He's had like 3 bad games. Every United player except De Gea and maybe Smalling has had that amount this season. Also, playing Bastian at CDM is a waste of who he is. If we are going to play two CDM's, it needs to be Morgan and Carrick. Problem is, Carrick is getting old, so bringing in Matuidi should fix that.
As for the transfers out, Jones plays well for us, you know, when he actually plays. Dude could (and does) get injured sitting on the bench. There are so many better options than Valencia for us now, and I'm sick of playing wingers as fullbacks. Fellaini's exit is self-explanatory. Nick Powell needs to go to a lower division. Valdes need to go anywhere but United.
To conclude, I look at United and I don't see an issue with the squad, or the need to re-vamp more than two positions in it. Like most United fans, I feel that our style of play is to blame, not the actual players we have on the field.
I know, I know, it is way too early for this, but transfer periods are exciting as hell! Anyways, as you can tell from the title, I would like you guys to share your dream team of the club you support for the upcoming season. Try to not make it too unrealistic, please!
Transfers in:
If it wasn't for Atletico's and Real Madrid's transfer bans, I would have definitely added Carvajal, Koke, Isco and Griezmann to my transfer targets. I was also trying to include a full back, but I couldn't come up with a good value for money full back that would suit us.
Transfers out:
Currently on loan, but out next season:
Loan out again:
Don't care:
Final squad:
So, after taking into account everything I said earlier, this is what the squad would look like:
GK: Courtois, Begovic, Blackman
RB: Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Aina
LB: Baba, Aké, (Azpilicueta)
CB: Terry, Zouma, Cahill, Stones, (Ivanovic)
CDM: Mikel, Matic, Verratti
CM: Loftus-Cheek, Fabregas
RM: Willian, Traoré, (Pedro), Cuadrado (?)
LM: Hazard, Pedro, Kenedy
CAM: Teixeira, (Willian), Musonda Jr.
ST: Costa, Remy, Bamford
Bold: new signings
Bold italic: academy players or players that came back from loan
(in brackets): alternative positions player X can take over if player Y is injured/suspended
So, as you can see I decided to put Cuadrado in as we will have a new manager, who'll - perhaps - give him another chance as he is doing pretty good over at Juve. Verratti is a pretty unrealistic target, but he tops my wishlist so I had to include him. Concerning the striker spot I was indifferent between Bamford and Solanke but decided to go for Bamford as he's slightly more experienced than Dom. It might be a good idea to keep both around, though, as Costa and Remy are both injury-prone and the former might also miss some games due to his behaviour. Last but not least, Charly Musonda Jr. is a stand-out talent from our youth academy, who - even though he's pretty skinny and small - looks like the next big thing. Like I said earlier, I couldn't think of a good full back so let me know if you can come up with someone! The rest should be fairly clear.
